Maksim Perepelitsa is a cheerful and quick-witted man from a Ukrainian village, known throughout his town for his knack for spinning stories and slipping away from work when the moment suits him. When a summons to the army arrives, he hopes to shield himself from rivals by sending pumpkins to all the guys in the village on behalf of his beloved Marusya—an old-fashioned Ukrainian gesture that quietly signals a playful rejection of suitors. This bold move stirs the village, and even the kolkhoz assembly debates stripping him of his duty to serve in the Soviet Army. Yet Maksim vows to change his ways, setting the stage for a comedy of errors and growth.
In military life, he tries to dodge responsibility and skirt the tougher parts of service. His clever tricks land him in trouble, and he is arrested and confined to the guardhouse after being caught outside the camp on unauthorized leave. The missteps are many, but his flexible spirit and good-natured heart help him adjust to military life and begin a path of re-education. Through a series of training exercises, Maksim shows quick thinking and initiative, eventually earning the rank of junior sergeant.
Back home on a holiday break, Maksim reveals genuine heroism when he rescues his grandfather, Musiy, from a dangerous pit. The warmth of village life returns as he weighs rumors that Marusya may not be waiting for him; gathering his courage, he goes to visit her. Marusya, preferring Maksim above all others, rebuffs other suitors, and the two are finally united in their love.
Across these adventures, Maksim moves through a circle of memorable characters. In the village, he counts on friends like Marco Muha, a confidant who is described as a friend of Kondrat Perepelitsa, and Grishka, whose presence adds to the camaraderie and trouble alike. The military world he inhabits is overseen by Sablin, the Starshina, whose authority keeps the unit in line. And guiding him off the battlefield is the Assistant, played by Lidiya Fedoseyeva-Shukshina.
