The story centers on a forbidden romance between Juana La Zoronga Sara Lezana and Rafael El Taranto Daniel Martín, two gypsies from rival families in Barcelona. Their bond blooms after Rafael glimpses Juana dancing at a gypsy wedding, and he is instantly drawn to her beauty and grace. As their affection grows, they are quietly buoyed by the support of their younger siblings, who share a hidden friendship and sympathize with the couple’s passion, even as the feud between their clans looms over them.

Juana earns the wary respect of Rafael’s formidable mother, Angustias Carmen Amaya, through her fearless spirit and the pure joy she brings to flamenco. But Juana’s father Rosendo Antonio Prieto remains stubborn, a holdover from past grievances, despite pleas from Juana, Rafael, and Angustias. In a desperate bid to sever the romance, Rosendo offers Juana to his colleague Curro José Manuel Martín to make her forget about Rafael. Yet neither Juana nor Rafael can imagine a life apart from each other, and their love endures even as Rosendo’s anger and pride complicate their fate.

Curro’s arrogance grows as the situation escalates. He kills Mojigondo Antonio Gades, a fellow musician and friend in Rafael’s circle, and brutalizes Juana when he suspects that she has continued meeting with Rafael. The violence and betrayal deepen the rift between the families, amplifying the sense that the lovers’ hope of a peaceful union may be crushed under the weight of old wounds.

Desperation drives Juana to seek out Rafael in his dovecote, where the two lovers reaffirm their commitment and plan to elope the following day. Their intimate moment is brief but real, a shared vow to escape an arranged fate. However, Curro, egged on by Juana’s brother Sancho Antonio Lavilla, uncovers them together and fatally ends their bond by killing them both. In a fitting, brutal turn, Rafael’s brother pursues Curro into the stables and ends his life, bringing immediate sorrow but also a sense of measured justice to the surrounding tragedy.

In the wake of the carnage, Angustias and Rosendo confront their grief side by side, recognizing that the feud’s grip has finally begun to loosen. Juana’s younger brother offers solace to Rafael’s younger sister, signaling a quiet reconciliation of families that once seemed irrevocably divided. The film closes on a note that grief has tempered the old enmity, leaving behind a fragile hope that love and loss may, at last, redraw the lines that once separated them.
