Two Lisbon men grab the attention of Inspector Fonseca: Aristides Mavros, a wealthy and notorious Greek criminal, and Robert John Evans, an American suspected of smuggling with a fast boat. The case unfolds against a backdrop of luxury, danger, and quiet desperation as the inspector pieces together a web of motives that could cost lives.
A number of women circle around Mavros, including Maria Maddalena Masanet as Maria, a secretary who comes to him for help when she is destitute. The atmosphere around the crime lord is thick with tension and unspoken desires. A menacing and jealous servant, Seraphim, is secretly in love with Maria, but the feeling is not returned, creating a volatile triangle that fuels the plot and tests loyalties.
Sylvia Merrill, an Irish-born woman played by Maureen O’Hara and married to a much older millionaire, Lloyd Merrill, has grown tired of waiting for government officials to rescue him from a perilous position behind the Iron Curtain. She schemes with caution, offering a large sum of money to Mavros, who quickly discerns that Sylvia has an ulterior motive: a swift path to her husband’s fortune should he die without a will. The stakes rise as the plan to remove Lloyd unfolds, weaving Sylvia more deeply into the dangerous underworld she once trusted to keep him safe.
Evans is commissioned by Mavros to pursue Lloyd in his boat, kicking off a dangerous pursuit along Lisbon’s shoreline. As Evans immerses himself in this perilous mission, he develops a romantic attraction to Maria, drawing him into a delicate conflict: Seraphim, who already harbors a deadly resentment, makes no secret of his intent to eliminate the American. The tension intensifies as Mavros sanctions a possible hit on Evans during the rescue attempt, and Sylvia becomes complicit in hoping Lloyd will not return alive.
The chase climaxes with Evans narrowly thwarting Seraphim’s lethal plans, watching him fall to his death. Fonseca, tipped off by Maria, prepares an informer to name the smuggler, only to be stunned when the evidence points to Mavros rather than Evans. In the end, Maria finds happiness with Evans, while Sylvia learns the bitter cost of betraying the trust that held her husband’s life in the balance. The city’s shadows retreat, leaving behind a tale of desire, deceit, and the fragile limits of loyalty.
