Spoilers ahead
Hélène and Jean have pledged their love to one another, though they are not yet betrothed. Their fragile bond rests on the belief that their connection will outrank all others, even as it allows a degree of flirtation and wandering affections. [Hélène] has begun to fear that [Jean]’s ardor may be cooling, a doubt she chooses not to voice openly but to test in private. She engineers a subtle confession, pretending that her own feelings have waned to a mere friendship. When [Jean] welcomes this supposed shift with ease and accepts her as a friend rather than a lover, her outward poise hides a searing ache. The moment of his casual relinquishment becomes the spark for a colder, more calculating plan—revenge masquerading as resolution.
