Madame de La Pommeraye, Cécile De France, is a young and pretty widow who has long claimed she never fell in love. She yields to the steady, almost obsessive courting of the Marquis des Arcis, Édouard Baer, a renowned libertine. After two years of attention, the Marquis grows distant, and when he begins to neglect her, she hints that their feelings have cooled. He does not deny it, and her hurt sparks a plan for revenge.

To carry out her scheme, she learns of an unfortunate noblewoman and her illegitimate daughter, Mademoiselle de Joncquières, Alice Isaaz, who survive by entertaining men in a nightclub. Madame moves them into a discreet apartment, dresses them in black to resemble devout Catholics, and walks them through the park to catch the Marquis’s eye. He is immediately struck by the girl’s beauty, despite not knowing who she really is. Madame claims she does not know where they live, while detectives close in, setting the trap in motion.

On instructions from Madame de La Pommeraye, the girl resists all offers save for marriage. On the wedding night, the Marquis promises to withhold her virginity until she feels ready. The next morning, Madame takes the newlyweds for a drive and stops outside the club, revealing that this is where his wife and mother-in-law once worked. Enraged, the Marquis rejects his wife and goes home, where he finds her alive, having been saved from a river she had attempted to leap into.

The next morning, the Marquis tells her the marriage is over and that she is free to choose again. She begs him to forget the dark past and to forgive her role in the cruel trick. His honest response and growing tenderness move him, and a reconciliation seems possible. Yet the tale is seen through the eyes of a loyal friend, Lucienne, Laure Calamy, who dares not reveal the happiness that has emerged for the couple.
