Lena Rivers 1932

Lena Rivers, Charlotte Henry, is born to a mother who dies in childbirth and is raised by her grandparents, the Nicholses—Grandfather Nichols, Russell Simpson, and Grandmother Nichols, Beryl Mercer. Lena grows up never knowing her father. When she is a teenager, Grandfather Nichols dies, and Lena and her grandmother move to Kentucky to live with her uncle, John Nichols, John St. Polis, and his family. John’s wife, Mathilda Nichols, is not happy about Lena’s arrival and holds her birth against Lena. John’s daughter, Caroline Nichols, Joyce Compton, also looks down on Lena, calling her “common” and keeping her at arm’s length.

On their arrival they meet a neighbor, Mr. Graham, James Kirkwood, who shows a clear interest in Lena. While guiding Lena through his horses, he explains that she reminds him of a girl he loved long ago; that girl believed he had left her, and he lost her. Lena discovers she has a natural affinity with horses when she calms a frisky horse, Brimstone. Mr. Graham gives Brimstone to Lena, marking a turning point in her life. Mr. Graham and Lena grow closer, and Lena learns that he is her father. He fears telling her, since she has come to hate the father she never knew. To help Lena financially, Mr. Graham arranges a race so that Brimstone wins, a move that underscores his quiet devotion and willingness to bend conventions to secure Lena’s future. Tragedy then strikes as Lena’s grandmother dies, leaving her to confront loneliness, yet the story bends toward reconciliation as family ties, forgiveness, and resilience pull the characters toward a hopeful, happy ending.
