Umayal, tired of being confined at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, decides to take her friend Priya’s suggestion and visit her brother Anand’s newly opened library, where she immerses herself in her passion for reading. During her visit, she discovers an ancient book titled Karungaapiyam, which is filled with a collection of short stories containing supernatural themes. Despite the book’s appearance, suggesting it is quite old and possibly written many decades ago, most of the stories are set in the present day and involve realistic elements, leaving Umayal intrigued and somewhat mystified about the author’s ability to foresee the future. When she notices that the author’s name isn’t listed, she calls Priya to check the library’s catalog, eager to learn more about the mysterious author and continuing her reading journey.

As she delves into the stories, she begins to experience strange phenomena in her surroundings, including visions of ghosts that seem to correspond to those depicted in the stories. Despite feeling uneasy, she presses on, captivated by the unfolding narrative. The fourth story, in particular, transports her to a different time — during British colonial rule in India — in a remote Tamil Nadu village. This tale centers around a woman named Karthika who was highly respected and beloved for her kindness and generosity. The villagers believed she possessed divine blessings, and that whatever she wrote had the power to come true.

However, dark events unfold when mysterious murders start plaguing the village, and children begin disappearing. Karthika’s husband, who was serving in the military, suddenly dies, leaving her alone with their daughter Umayal (who shares her name with the story’s heroine) and his brother. Soon after, rumors spread that Karthika was a witch responsible for the heinous acts, and she is ostracized by the community. Forced to move to the outskirts of the village, she becomes a target of suspicion and hostility. The true culprit behind the murders, however, is revealed to be her husband’s greedy brother, who aims to blame Karthika to seize her family’s wealth.

As the narrative progresses, the villagers, mostly deceived by the villain’s manipulations, turn against Karthika and end her life through violence, stoning her in a tragic and unjust act. But her story doesn’t end there. Karthika returns as a vengeful ghost to punish her enemies and protect her daughter, Umayal. When the villainous men plan to kill Umayal just as they had murdered Karthika, the ghost of Karthika intervenes, killing them in retribution. The story concludes on this chilling note of revenge and justice.

When Umayal finishes reading this story, the paranormal activity escalates, prompting her to rush out of the library in fear. Once home, she recounts her terrifying experiences to Priya, who then reveals that the author of Karungaapiyam is named Umayal Karthika—the full name of our protagonist. This startling revelation sparks shock and curiosity, as they begin to suspect a deep connection between the story’s author and Umayal herself. Priya suggests that Karthika might have foreseen her own demise and deliberately documented it in the book. She also proposes that Umayal could be the reincarnation of Karthika, possibly possessing supernatural powers similar to those attributed to her ancestor.

To explore this possibility, Priya insists that Umayal try writing something. Initially, she pens humorous and nonsensical phrases, but then she writes that the murderer is Santa Claus wielding an axe, with a bell nearby. When nothing unusual occurs, both friends laugh off the coincidence, and Priya decides to leave. As she turns to go, however, Umayal glimpses a figure in the hallway — a Santa Claus with an axe and a bell in hand, confirming her fears and hinting that the supernatural connection might be real.

This story combines elements of mystery, supernatural folklore, and ancestral reincarnation, creating an intriguing narrative that blends past and present, truth and myth, with a haunting sense of destiny that seems to reach across time.
