Murugan is a diligent scooter mechanic in Madurai, and life rolls on smoothly until a wealthy student, Aishwarya, fixates on him. Her infatuation grows and she coaxes him to break away from the constraints of her powerful family, who have their own plans for her future. At first, he hesitates to love someone from a different caste and class, but as their bond deepens, he recognizes her genuine affection and returns it. Realizing their union would be blocked by her relatives, they decide to flee to Chennai, aided by a close friend, Stephen, and they marry in secret.

Yet the threat from Aishwarya’s family is far from over. They are relentless and relentless, and soon chase the couple to Chennai, where they pretend to have consented to the marriage and urge them to return to Madurai. On the return voyage, the group marches the couple to a farmland where Aishwarya’s kin have gathered, and the atmosphere turns tense. The relatives, including Rajendran, beat Murugan, and Aishwarya’s father demands that she remove the mangalyam—an act she fears could seal Murugan’s fate. Out of fear for his life, she agrees to marry someone else to shield him, and Murugan is left battered and abandoned.

Years pass. Aishwarya, traveling with her husband and child, encounters Murugan again, now appearing as a mentally deranged beggar at a traffic signal. She faints upon recognizing him and is rushed to a hospital. That night, she returns to the same signal in hopes of finding him, and her husband follows, understanding the heartbreak at play. He arranges Murugan’s care at a mental health center, and the couple witnesses a painful, quiet reconciliation through care and distance.

The closing title cards reveal the film’s framing: this is a true incident recounted by the girl’s husband to the director during a train journey, a story that inspired the making of the movie.
