Aryan Dashni from Homs, Syria, and his father join a group of refugees attempting to cross the Hungarian border by boat. The perilous journey grows chaotic when the group’s papers are lost and a border guard unit sweeps in, forcing a dangerous scramble that leads to their separation. In the ensuing turmoil, Aryan is shot several times by a police officer named László, yet instead of dying he acquires a mysterious power to levitate. When he lands, he is quickly apprehended and brought to the hospital ward of the nearest refugee camp.
Gábor Stern is a doctor working in that hospital ward. He once practiced at a regular hospital but, after a night of drinking impaired his judgment during a surgery that killed an aspiring young athlete, he lost his job and faced a lawsuit. He now tries to gather money to bribe the victim’s family to drop the case. He facilitates this by selling medical referrals that allow refugees to move from the camp to a Budapest hospital, from which they can flee. His girlfriend Vera, another doctor, is part of the scheme.
Gábor is seen selling one of the referrals to a refugee who uses the name of Aryan’s father, leveraging documents stolen from the Dashnis during the cross-border chaos. It’s revealed that Aryan’s father is among the many who drowned during the border crossing. When Gábor comes to the ward to examine Aryan, the child’s levitation resumes. Shocked and fascinated, Gábor helps Aryan escape the camp and proposes a plan: take Aryan to Budapest so he can serve as a spiritual healer and demonstrate his powers to attract patients, with both of them sharing the money they earn. Gábor promises to help Aryan find his father.
Their initial healing sessions prove lucrative, drawing in more clients. However, László, who already suspects Aryan’s abilities and is aided by the police, closes in on them. The duo manages to stay ahead, aided by Vera’s continued involvement.
Aryan eventually travels to the illicit refugee camp at Budapest Keleti railway station, where Aryan’s father had told him to meet if they were separated. There, he recognizes the refugee who stole their papers, who is connected to a terrorist plot aimed at bombing the Budapest Metro. Following the terrorist, Gábor loses contact with Aryan. The pair enters a subway, and moments later the explosive device detonates, killing dozens. Aryan is not badly injured, but he floats to the roof of a nearby building, where a nearby woman looks on in stunned disbelief.
Believing Aryan might be dead and learning that Aryan’s father has also died, Gábor feels deep remorse for exploiting the boy. He returns the money to the victim’s family and, when they refuse, sincerely asks for forgiveness and leaves.
At the site of the terrorist attack, Gábor overhears a woman praying for an “angel” who “flew to the sky.” He deduces that Aryan floated away and eventually finds him on a rooftop. They embrace, and Gábor brings Aryan back to the hospital to address his wounds, seeking Vera’s help again. But because the terrorist used the Dashnis’ papers, authorities now believe Aryan to be one of the bombers. Vera notifies the police, and Gábor and Aryan flee once more in a tense escape.
The two take refuge in a hotel. When Gábor goes out to summon medical aid, he is betrayed and seized by László. László escorts Aryan down to the hotel lobby, but Gábor overpowers a police officer to seize a gun and holds him hostage, giving Aryan a chance to escape. A confrontation ensues; Gábor is shot. In a desperate moment, the two trigger the hotel’s fire alarm with a cigarette, and Gábor urges Aryan to reach a fire escape and fly away.
In a final confrontation, Aryan is cornered in a hotel corridor. Gábor arrives just in time to threaten László with a gun, buying Aryan precious seconds to jump through a window and rise again. Gábor dies in the struggle, and László hesitates at the window before pursuing Aryan. The film closes with a sweeping view: hundreds of people look skyward in awe, witnessing the miraculous escape and the unresolved, human toll of the chase.
