Journey to Shiloh 1968

During the American Civil War, seven young Texans in the Confederate army—the Concho County Comanches—set out for Shiloh, Tennessee, where a pivotal battle looms. Their trek is filled with danger and hard choices, testing loyalty, courage, and the hunger for home. Among them is Willie Bill Bearden, a steady presence whose resolve anchors the group as they press toward the front lines.

Early on, J.C. Sutton decides he no longer wants to follow Buck Burnett and takes his money, only for Buck to find him just as card sharks deal him a fatal blow. The remaining five soldiers rally, and Buck rejoins them as they ride a stage toward Shreveport, Louisiana. On the road they pick up a runaway slave and deliver him to the sheriff in the next town, only to witness a harsh betrayal: the man is hanged on the road, despite promises he would be returned to his owner.

In Shreveport, Buck meets Gabrielle DuPrey and they share a fleeting, passionate bond, but Buck leaves her behind to lead his men toward Richmond, Virginia, where the Confederate cause awaits. Their journey thrusts them into the harsh rhythm of war, duty, and the temptations that cling to soldiers on the move.

Once in the army of Braxton Bragg, the Texans endure the brutal violence of the Battle of Shiloh. Little Bit Lucket dies from disease, followed by Todo McLean from a gunshot wound, and Eubie Bell in a mortar attack. Willie Bill Bearden is struck down in the fighting, but the losses don’t end there as the conflict takes a heavy toll on the group. Miller Nalls deserts and is later hunted down, dying beside Buck in a barn as the army closes in.

Before Miller’s final breath, he urges Buck to abandon the war, find the girl from Shreveport, and return to Texas. In the aftermath, Sgt. Mercer Barnes, who befriended the Texans, persuades Bragg to spare Buck from execution as a deserter, allowing him to return home as the last surviving member of the original seven who set out for Richmond. The film leaves a stark portrait of young men torn between loyalty and survival, their fates sealed by the brutal grind of war and the quiet pull of home.
