On a cold Christmas Eve in Los Angeles, John [David Arquette] is fast asleep in a city park when a thief slips off with his shoes—the very pair that guards the money he has scraped together. He wakes in a rush, chases after the thief, and fights hard but comes up empty-handed. The loss stings not just because those sneakers are lucky, but because he is trying to sew together enough cash to pay for an overnight stay in a fancy hotel to mark his Christmas birthday. Throughout the night, every time John manages to assemble money—whether through rough prostitution or taking from clients—someone or something rips it away again, either by robbery or as payback for a drug debt tied to a deal he once burned.

Donner, [Lukas Haas] an eager, impulsive hustler who has just fallen for John, tries to coax him toward a new life in Branson, Missouri. Donner has a relative who runs a theme park there and can line them up with work, a glimmer of stability in an unstable world. John is wary at first, but after a string of brutal experiences on the street, he slowly agrees to consider the plan. The pair manage to come up with enough money for two bus tickets to Branson, a foothold on a different path, a chance to swap the city’s harsh nights for something steadier. Before they leave, John takes one last date to earn additional money, aiming to fund the rest of their trip.

The night of the encounter unfolds in a motel, where the date, overwhelmed by remorse, confesses he is not gay and insists he did not intend to be mocked. John replies with a quiet, human deflection—he is not gay either—but the conversation ignites a violent reaction. The date’s rage erupts, and John is mercilessly beaten. When Donner finally finds John later, he drags the lifeless body from the bathroom to the bed, tearfully admitting that it was he who stole the sneakers and the money in a desperate bid to persuade John to leave town with him. In this moment, the film strips away illusion and reveals the consequences of longing, desperation, and an impossible dream of starting anew on the edge of a city that never seems to forgive.
