Nisha Asha Parekh R. Singh hails from a very wealthy family in Neelgaon, India, and she has reached the age where marriage weighs heavily on her future. Her father, the shrewd Sardar Roop Singh Mubarak, hopes to seal an alliance with his friend’s son, Sohan, a match Nisha does not welcome. On a journey to Darjeeling with a dance troupe, she crosses paths with Popat Lal, the son of one of Roop Singh’s business associates, Dev Anand, and after a series of lighthearted misadventures, the pair discover a sincere and undeniable affection for one another.

The romance leads Nisha to bring Popat to her father’s side, with an eye toward a union that could also double as a business arrangement. But the moment Roop Singh enters the room, the mood shifts: Popat has disappeared, replaced by a man who claims to be the real Popat. Nisha’s world tilts on its axis, and she finds herself pained and wary, her trust shaken.

Popat eventually reemerges to reveal a startling truth: his name is actually Sunder, and both families had once promised their children to one another, only for Roop Singh to alter his mind later on. Believing his honesty, Nisha chooses to stand by him and agrees to marry without her father’s blessing, driven by a sense of commitment that transcends parental decree.

Yet the wedding preparations are interrupted when a new obstacle arrives in the form of Khanna Raj Mehra. Khanna reveals a troubling allegation: Sunder is already married to a woman named Shanti, and, according to his account, Shanti has been killed, marking Sunder as the principal accused in a police case. The revelation tests Nisha’s loyalties and the couple’s resolve, casting a shadow over the impending marriage.
