Mohandas, a successful mill owner, discovers that his trusted employee, Rajan Kishan Mehta has been siphoning off money from the business. When he confronts him, Rajan shoves Mohandas out of a high-rise window, ending his life. Mohandas’s only daughter and heiress, Sunita Asha Parekh, is crushed by the tragedy and, in a bid to secure the family’s future, pens a will naming Rajan as the sole heir to her father’s property after her own death. Rajan plays the grieving son-in-law act, telling Sunita that it was Mohandas’s last wish for them to be married, a claim he uses to tighten his grip on the estate and on Sunita’s fate.

Soon after, Monica Helen, a cabaret dancer who is also Rajan’s lover, confronts Rajan in Sunita’s presence. She lays bare a crucial clue: an unsent letter from Mohandas to his friend Karamchand, which clearly shows Rajan’s embezzlement and parasitic manipulation. Monica then reveals a harsher truth: Rajan was also responsible for Sunita’s father’s murder, and Sunita herself is now his next target. Panicked, Sunita hurries to her car, only to discover that Rajan has tampered with the brakes, leaving her unable to stop as the vehicle plunges down a hill. Sunita leaps from the car just in time, and the police eventually declare her dead—though no body is ever found, allowing Rajan to brood that she may still be alive and ready to be hunted.

Determined to seek justice for her father, Sunita decides to go to Bombay to retrieve the incriminating letter from Monica. To do so, she disguises herself as Soni, a village girl, and secretly hides in the back of a lorry belonging to Mohan [Jeetendra] and Johnny [Ravindra Kapoor], two Banjaras who are on a caravan to Bombay to collect Mohan’s brother, Montu [Mehmood Jr.], before continuing on to Khandala and Bangalore to visit their mother. When Mohan catches Sunita pilfering his food, he reluctantly agrees to take her all the way to Bombay.

In Monica’s dressing room, Sunita discovers Monica and Rajan together, confirming Monica’s complicity in Rajan’s schemes. Rajan, sensing danger from Karamchand, claims he fears that Karamchand will risk his life for Sunita and will arrive in Bangalore in two months. After Rajan spots Sunita, she slips back into the caravan and Montu helps her slip into their tent for safety. Mohan learns of Sunita’s presence but, to win her trust, Sunita offers to work as their servant in return for passage. However, Sunita’s lack of cooking skills leads Montu to steal Ratna’s food and serve it to Sunita, a ruse Ratna eventually exposes. This leads Mohan to eject Sunita, only to be persuaded by Johnny to bring her back into the fold.

Meanwhile, Nisha, Mithalal Tota’s prized dancer who is smitten with Mohan, launches a confrontation with Sunita. To placate Nisha, Mohan tells Nisha that Sunita is his future wife, a deception that fuels tension at a crucial performance. Nisha’s demands escalate when she insists Sunita be kept away, and during a warehouse show in Poona, Nisha refuses to perform unless Sunita is removed from the scene. To avoid trouble with the authorities, Mohan invites Sunita to dance beside him and the performance continues with Sunita by his side.

Sunita’s fortune turns when she narrowly escapes Rajan’s men who kidnap her at a bustling market and ends up in a hospital. The nurse’s note about Mohan’s concern for her survival awakens a spark of feeling in Sunita, and she begins to see a future with him. Mohan, inspired by her gradual warmth, proposes, but Sunita hesitates, still haunted by her past marriage to Rajan. Her hesitation drives Mohan toward despair, and he seeks solace in alcohol.

Rajan’s backstabbing plan continues, with the intent to eliminate Monica after Sunita’s fate is sealed. Monica, however, vows to protect the truth and contacts Karamchand to warn him about Rajan’s schemes, refusing to discard the letter that could indict him. After a tense period of reconciliation, Sunita and Mohan reach Bangalore for their wedding, only for Sunita to flee once more to contact Karamchand, who is tragically killed by Rajan’s men before the couple can seal their union.

The climactic confrontation takes place when Mohan, Sunita, Nisha, and Montu arrive at Monica’s home, where Rajan’s men break in, restrain Monica, and abduct the quartet. Nisha manages to escape and frees Mohan by cutting the rope he’s suspended from, while Montu helps Sunita into a safer position. Mohan frees Sunita and confronts Rajan, who rises with gun drawn. In a dramatic moment, Nisha intervenes and takes the fatal bullet, sacrificing herself to save Sunita and Mohan. The police finally close in and shoot Rajan, ending his tyrannical hold over Sunita and the others. With Rajan dead and the immediate danger over, the Banjaras bid farewell to Sunita, who chooses to rejoin their caravan and continue her journey, now free from the threat that once consumed her life.
