When Riley is eleven, her life shifts dramatically as her family moves from Minnesota to San Francisco for her father’s job. On her first day at a new school, Sadness unexpectedly touches Joy’s work, turning a moment of pure happiness into a tremor of tears. This marks Riley’s first sad core memory, and the accident is more than a small hiccup: in a frantic bid to reclaim control, Joy tries to eject the memory through a pneumatic tube, but the struggle sends ripples through the mechanism, loosening several other core memories and causing the five personality islands to crumble. In a sickening moment, Joy, Sadness, and the core memories are pulled from Headquarters, leaving Riley’s mind bereft of the guidance it relies on.

In the vacuum left by Joy and Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust attempt to create new, happy core memories. The effort is clumsy and flawed, and the result is a growing disconnect between Riley and her parents, friends, and hobbies. As more memories fail to form the stable bridges they once did, Riley’s personality islands begin to crumble and eventually fall into the “Memory Dump,” a shadowy region where memories fade into nonexistence. The longer this drift continues, the more Riley drifts away from the people she loves, and the more fragile her sense of self becomes.

Wandering through the vast corridors of Riley’s long-term memory, Joy and Sadness encounter Bing Bong, a pink, prehistoric elephant who was once the very picture of Riley’s happiest childhood imagination. Bing Bong introduces them to a hopeful route—the “train of thought”—a way back to Headquarters. Yet danger lurks: Anger, determined to restore Riley’s happiness by any means, pressures Disgust and Fear into pursuing a quick, dangerous fix—an escape to Minnesota, the place where Riley’s cheerful memories were first formed. Joy, Sadness, and Bing Bong embark on the journey to catch the train; they manage to board, but the ride is interrupted by the collapse of another memory island, and the train derails.

In a moment of crisis, Joy attempts a perilous recall through a tube, hoping to return to Headquarters. The ground gives way beneath the tube, and Joy and Bing Bong tumble into the Memory Dump. As the situation grows darker, Joy sees a crucial, painful memory from Riley’s past in which she loses a hockey game. This memory, once sad, had become happier because of the support Riley received from her parents and friends. It is a turning point: Joy realizes that Sadness’s true purpose is not to ruin happiness but to signal when Riley is overwhelmed and needs help. With this revelation, Joy and Bing Bong break through, trying to escape the Memory Dump by using a song-fueled wagon, a daring ascent that is thwarted by their own weight.

On a final, heartbreaking sacrifice, Bing Bong leaps from the wagon to free Joy, allowing her to escape as he fades away. The loss of Bing Bong is a stark reminder that memories and imagination can be fragile, but it also rekindles a sense of purpose in Joy. Back in Riley’s head, Anger’s plan to restore joy by forcing a quick return to Minnesota falters when the system is overloaded—fleeting happiness gives way to a depressive lull that makes Riley drop her plans and board a bus heading back toward Minnesota.

Joy finds her way back to Sadness, and together they return to Headquarters. Rather than fight for control, they shift the balance: Joy hands the console to Sadness, letting the latter reset the system and bring back Riley’s ability to feel. The effect is immediate and transformative. Riley is able to voice to her parents that she misses her old life, and her parents respond with warmth, confessing that they miss Minnesota too. This moment of honesty repairs the rift between Riley and her family, and Sadness guides Riley’s emotions toward a more balanced approach to her new life.

With the console finally in capable hands, Joy and Sadness join hands to create a new core memory that blends happiness with sorrow, giving Riley a richer, more mature sense of self. A new island blooms to symbolize Riley’s growing acceptance of San Francisco, and the emotional landscape stabilizes into a healthier equilibrium. The scene widens to show Riley a year later—now twelve and thriving—having formed new friendships, picking up fresh hobbies, and adapting to her urban home. Inside Headquarters, the five emotions monitor a vibrant, expanded set of memories that work in harmony, prepared to meet the future with a wiser, more nuanced understanding of what it means to be Riley.

Amid this evolution, a subtle, almost playful warning glows in the control room: a red alarm labeled PUBERTY. It is not a crisis, but a reminder that growing up will bring new challenges and changes.
