I’ll Be Home for Christmas 1988

Set in 1944 Rockport, Massachusetts, during the final days of World War II, I’ll Be Home for Christmas follows the Bundy family as they brace for a holiday that could redefine them. Head of the household Joseph [Hal Holbrook] Bundy and his wife Martha [Eva Marie Saint] Bundy anticipate the homecoming of their grown children, especially Mike [Whip Hubley] Bundy, who has completed his combat missions in England and is due to return for good. His pregnant wife Nora [Courteney Cox] Bundy has been living with the Bundys since his departure, and she eagerly awaits his return while preparing to welcome their first child; she ultimately gives birth to a baby boy, a moment that brings both relief and renewed responsibility to the family.

Meanwhile, Terrel [Jason Oliver] Bundy is between boot camp and an overseas assignment, and his stubborn streak often puts him at odds with their father as the war weighs on everyone’s decisions. Leah [Nancy Travis] Bundy, the family’s only daughter, rides a bus home to Rockport shortly after the painful death of her fiancé and there crosses paths with Aaron Copler [Peter Gallagher], a soldier with nowhere else to go for the holidays. The two feel a spark, and Aaron is welcomed to spend Christmas with the Bundy clan, adding a new thread to an already crowded table and complicating the emotional terrain of a house that’s trying to hold together.

The youngest member of the clan, Davey [David Moscow], is 13 years old and dreams of a longer war so he can grow up fast enough to take part in the action he imagines. Another steady presence in the story is Isaiah Cawley [Charles Tyner], a Western Union telegram deliverer who brings the stark news of loved ones lost overseas, a recurring reminder of the cost of conflict amid the season’s cheer.

Alongside these human stories, the film quietly follows Joseph and Martha as they stretch their savings and ration stamps to carve out the best possible Christmas dinner, underscoring how, even in hard times, families cling to ritual and generosity.
