Set in New York City’s garment district, the story follows Harriet Boyd, a driven model and fashion designer, alongside production manager Sam Cooper and salesman Teddy Sherman as they leave their firm to launch Sherboyco Dresses, a bold venture specializing in accessible, $10.95 outfits. The trio’s plans are unexpectedly derailed when Harriet’s mother, Mrs. Boyd, refuses to release the insurance money the family received after Harriet’s father died—the money Harriet has promised to her younger sister Marge Boyd for her wedding. In a calculated move, Harriet convinces Marge and her fiancé Ray to hand over the funds, and Sherboyco Dresses opens its doors.
Teddy, who has fallen for Harriet, is stunned and dismayed when she flirts with a lecherous buyer during a business dinner. He proposes marriage, but Harriet declines, insisting she values her freedom. This rejection strains their partnership, and Teddy tries to back out—only to discover that their contract is ironclad, binding him to the venture.
Meanwhile, Harriet becomes involved with J. F. Noble, the owner of a chain of upscale department stores who asks her to quit her current work and join him exclusively. Harriet’s mood grows uncertain and strained as this new possibility looms. She visits Noble to decline his offer, but Teddy interrupts, misreading her visit as a bid to leave Sherboyco. Heartbroken and furious, he leaves town for a sales trip, while Harriet makes a shocking move: she transfers funds from Sherboyco into a new company she is forming and halts production of Sherboyco’s dresses, turning her design talent toward supplying Noble’s stores.
Unaware of Harriet’s shifting loyalties, Teddy continues taking orders for Sherboyco’s popular, affordable line while away. The turning point comes when Hermione Griggs contacts Teddy about an important order that has not arrived, revealing Harriet’s deception. Harriet tries to persuade her partners that aligning with Noble could be profitable, but Sam and Teddy refuse and opt for bankruptcy rather than join the rival venture. Harriet prepares to sail to Paris with Noble, believing this new path could secure her future, but a moment of clarity changes her mind: she recognizes that her commitment to Sam and Teddy is too important to ignore. She returns to Sherboyco, where she openly confesses her love for Teddy and asks both Teddy and Sam for forgiveness, choosing to rebuild what they started together.
