A jobless youth from upcountry, Roman Marek Kondrat Boryczko, trudges through a midden-strewn alley with a single suitcase, immersed in a mood that feels like the late 1920s or early 1930s. By chance he witnesses a well-dressed, mustachioed middle-aged man ejecting another despondent young man from the backdoor of a grand hotel. When this doorway moment fades, Roman meets an even sharper-dressed man inside the doorway and immediately asks for a job. This man is Albin Michał Pawlicki, the nephew of Hotel Pacific’s owner Pancer Čestmír Řanda, who hires Roman on the spot and ushers him into the hotel’s bustling world.
Roman is assigned as a busboy and soon shares a room with Fryc Roman Skamene, a fellow countryman who quickly reveals the informal rules and brutal hierarchy of the hotel’s kitchen staff. It becomes clear that violence and intimidation are commonplace among the senior waiters, creating a tense, almost theatrical atmosphere that constantly tests new staff. Fryc’s presence and advice pull Roman into a rough education on how to survive in this environment, while a veteran waiter named Henek Martin Hron shows him sly, improvisational ways to get back at the more powerful colleagues by dipping into the till.
As the hotel’s guests prove to be demanding, the power dynamics grow sharper. A regular customer, Baron Humaniewski Czesław Wołłejko, makes persistent unwanted advances toward Roman, underscoring the precarious position of younger workers in relation to the wealthy patrons. The head waiter, Fornalski Roman Wilhelmi, embodies the threatening authority figure who polices every fault with a sharp eye for opportunity and a quick temper.
A fateful moment arrives when a slice of lemon on the floor leads to a fatal fall for a senior waiter—an accident that Fryc confesses was caused by Fornalski’s negligence. Roman’s instinct to expose the truth tempts him to threaten a report to the waiters’ union, but the maître d’ steps in and, rather than firing him, uses the moment to solidify Roman’s position and help him advance toward the senior waiting staff. The intrigue deepens as Roman realizes that the investigation may also be tied to people close to the hotel’s inner circle.
The tension between old loyalties and personal degrees of freedom intensifies as Roman earns a promotion to the waiting staff, while Fryc fails the exam for the third time and, on New Year’s Eve, attempts suicide and is fired. A new chapter begins as Roman grows more confident, even growing a mustache, and begins a relationship with Hela Stanisława Celińska, a tearoom worker whose romance with him is forbidden by Pancer, who prohibits relationships among his staff.
Seeking a measure of companionship and resilience, Fryc reappears in Roman’s life, now a vagrant who has been offered a job managing a country inn by an elderly widow. Their reunion unfolds over vodka in the station’s café, and the two men riff on the hotel’s rules and foibles, trading barbs and memories as the past lingers in the air. Although their estrangement is momentary, the reunion marks a turning point in their paths—one choosing a quieter life, the other remaining entangled in the hotel’s machinery.
A pivotal incident erupts when a drunken diner disrupts the tearoom, insisting that the waiter take a candy from him and attempting to force it into Roman’s mouth to demonstrate his supposed generosity. The confrontation forces Roman to confront how he has been treated—almost like a horse—by a class that often treats service staff as invisible. Fornalski’s authority tightens, but the truth about embezzlement surfaces: Roman realizes that the hotel’s finances are being siphoned by a senior figure, and Pancer’s own past actions threaten to complicate any attempt to reveal the truth.
Roman’s sense of justice clashes with practical concerns. He discovers that the very person who betrayed his private life with Hela is also entwined in the hotel’s financial misdeeds. This revelation prompts a crucial choice: expose the crime and risk betrayal from within the hotel’s power structure or protect someone he cared about, even if it means keeping a dangerous secret. In a tense turn, Roman confronts the moral complexities of loyalty, ambition, and self-preservation, weighing the costs of truth against the consequences of silence.
Towards the end, Roman’s decision to navigate the truth within the hotel’s labyrinth leads him to a climactic moment of reckoning involving Pancer. The film then shifts toward a quiet, reflective finale as Roman is seen at a train station, a place of departures and uncertain futures, signaling a pause between the old world of the hotel’s opulence and the uncertain paths that lie ahead. The final image lingers on a man who has learned to move with the currents of a difficult environment, carrying with him the lessons of power, exploitation, camaraderie, and the cost of speaking truth in a world built on appearances.
