Higher Power Echo Score Breakdown

Overall, Higher Power struggles under its limited budget and uneven execution. Its inventive premise and occasional visual flair are undermined by a confusing narrative structure and inconsistent tone. While modest effects and editorial choices sometimes produce intriguing imagery, the film frequently resorts to dark, strobing lighting and disjointed sequences that hinder engagement. The acting and character motivations seldom cohere, leaving emotional beats unfulfilled. In sum, the film’s creative ambition is evident, but its flawed storytelling and technical compromises result in a largely unsatisfying experience.

Our own 0–100 rating, built from five aspects: art, character, story, the sensory experience and how well a film rewatches.

  • Art & Craft 60

In terms of art and craft, the film exhibits occasional inventiveness in its visual compositions and special effects within budget constraints. The cinematography leverages strobing lighting and underscored moments of atmosphere, though the overreliance on dark frames to conceal limitations undermines visual coherence. Production design shows glimpses of creativity, but inconsistent editing and abrupt scene transitions dilute the impact of its artistic efforts.

  • Character & Emotion 30

When it comes to character and emotion, the performances largely fail to establish depth or resonance. The protagonist’s motivations remain unclear, and supporting roles lack sufficient development for audience connection. Dialogue feels stilted and unconvincing, preventing meaningful empathy. Consequently, emotional arcs seldom align with narrative intent, leaving character interactions feeling detached rather than engaging.

  • Story & Flow 30

In terms of story and flow, the narrative begins with an intriguing premise but quickly descends into disjointed exposition. Plot threads collide without sufficient rationale, leading to confusing transitions and uneven pacing. Attempts at integrating familial drama and high-concept science elements feel poorly balanced, causing investment to wane. The conclusion delivers a thematic payoff that struggles to reconcile the preceding narrative inconsistencies.

  • Sensory Experience 45

When it comes to sensory experience, the film offers moments of striking visual style paired with a pulsating electronic score. Sound design frequently oscillates between subtle ambiance and abrasive noise, while strobing CGI sequences create immersive energy and potential discomfort. However, uneven audio levels, jarring lighting contrasts, and occasional mismatches between sound and imagery undermine overall cohesion. The result is a sensory palette that is intriguing yet erratic.

  • Rewatch Factor 20

As for rewatch factor, the film’s uneven execution and narrative confusion limit its replay appeal. While certain visual moments and the core premise may warrant revisit for fans of lo-fi sci-fi experimentation, the inconsistent pacing and unfulfilled character arcs diminish long-term engagement. Technical compromises and tonal shifts further discourage subsequent viewings. Overall, the movie lacks the cohesive charm to sustain repeated enjoyment.
