What Is Hecate About?

Set in an unnamed North African colony on the brink of nationalism before WWII, French diplomat Julien Rochelle meets the enigmatic Clothilde de Watteville. She may be the wife of a French official held in Siberia or the mythic Hecate, a sorceress haunting the European quarter. Based on Paul Morand’s novel, the film treats love as projection, crafting a magical, psychologically opaque atmosphere as Clothilde turns away from the chaos she provokes.
