During a brutal heat wave that triggers a widespread blackout, the brokerage firm where Frank Taylor [Ben Murphy] works goes dark, leaving him and his wife, Laura Taylor [Bonnie Bedelia], with nowhere to endure the sweltering day except a mountain cabin in a remote town that is already bottlenecked by heat, a faltering water supply, and limited power. The pair decide to relocate, hoping the cooler air of the mountains will bring some relief, and perhaps a moment of quiet away from a city spiraling under stress.

On the journey to the cabin, the Taylors’ car is seized, forcing them to abandon it and walk eight miles into the town that will become their temporary home. The trek is hard, but they press on, propelled by a mix of resolve and fatigue, until they reach a place that offers shelter and a chance to regroup. In town, they seek out Dr. Grayson [Lew Ayres], Laura’s long-standing family physician, hoping he can offer guidance for Laura as she carries the weight of recent strain and the oppressive heat.

Dr. Grayson recommends rest for Laura, hoping to ease the toll of the relentless conditions on her body. After his visit, the couple returns to their cabin, only to discover two young hikers have taken shelter there. At first, they feel a wave of irritation, but the need to share scarce resources and the desire to show hospitality win out, and they decide to let the hikers stay for a while.

Laura rests in the cabin, yet the situation grows more urgent when she gives birth prematurely. The newborn’s future looks precarious, and Dr. Grayson explains that the baby will not survive without an incubator—an item that is impossible to run without fuel for the generator in these conditions. The town’s electrical outages and fuel shortages mean help is scarce, and the scene underscores how fragile life is in the heat and blackout.

Undaunted, Frank, aided by the hikers and two local residents, tackles the daunting challenge of building and powering a makeshift incubator. The improvised device becomes a beacon of hope, a symbol that human ingenuity can endure even when infrastructure collapses around them. As the incubator hums to life and the baby lies inside, a sign of relief appears when rain finally breaks the oppressive heat and the water shortage that had beset the town for so long begins to ease, signaling a fragile but hopeful turn in their struggle to survive.
