As the dawn breaks over the British Raj era, Shivkar Bapuji Talpade, affectionately called Shivi and portrayed by Ayushmann Khurrana, finds himself entangled in a complex web of love and sorrow. His passionate yet unsuccessful pursuit of Sitara—a captivating local stage dancer played by Pallavi Sharda—leads to his father’s disapproval, ultimately resulting in Shivi being expelled from their family home and left to navigate life’s challenges on his own.
In his state of emotional distress, Shivi crosses paths with Pandit Subbaraya Shastri, an eccentric scientist, portrayed by Mithun Chakraborty. Shastri’s controversial experiments have placed him in the crosshairs of the British authorities, yet it is his remarkable ambition to create a flying machine that captivates Shivi’s attention. Aware of Shivi’s extensive knowledge of ancient Indian scriptures, Shastri entrusts him with a mysterious manuscript that reveals the secrets of early Indian aeronautics—a treasure he intends to leverage for his revolutionary project.
At first, Shivi hesitates to join Shastri in this audacious venture. However, driven by the heartache of his lost love, he ultimately reconsiders and accepts the scientist’s generous offer. The duo plunges into a rigorous quest to perfect the flying machine, facing numerous obstacles along the way. When financial resources run low, they seek assistance from a local king, only to experience a disheartening setback.
As Shivi learns of Sitara’s return to Bombay, where she battles poverty and debt, he makes a regrettable decision. In an attempt to rescue her, he sells Shastri’s valuable manuscript to a British officer, leading to a rift of betrayal between him and his mentor. The heaviness of his conscience results in profound remorse as he is devastated by news of Shastri’s untimely death.
Fueled by the aspiration to honor Shastri’s legacy, Shivi, along with Sitara and his nephew Narayan, embarks on a mission to realize the scientist’s dream. His journey takes him to Banaras, where he seeks wisdom from a revered guru, who imparts a cryptic code, “4121,” revealing the crucial knowledge of using mercury as fuel for their engine.
With the British authorities hot on his trail due to a complaint from his brother, Shivi’s situation grows increasingly perilous. In a thrilling turn of events, he is rescued by a brave freedom fighter, allowing him the opportunity to prepare for takeoff. Eluding capture alongside Sitara, he heads to the beach, where the moment finally arrives for him to defy gravity, etching his name in history as one of the first to soar in a flying machine.
