Gumraah delivers a competent thriller experience that lands between engaging and uneven. The film benefits from a tightly woven mystery, surprising twists, and a strong central performance by Aditya Roy Kapur, while the supporting cast contributes solidly. However, inconsistencies in direction, pacing, and an overlong song sequence dilute the momentum, and the execution of certain plot points feels amateurish. Consequently, the movie offers a worthwhile one‑time watch but lacks the consistency required for higher acclaim.
The Movie Echo Score Breakdown for Gumraah
Art & Craft
ART: The direction is uneven, with pacing that fluctuates and moments that feel amateurish, as noted by several viewers. Cinematography, however, receives commendation for atmospheric lighting and effective framing that enhances tension. Editing suffers from prolonged flashbacks and song sequences that interrupt narrative flow. Overall, the technical craftsmanship shows flashes of quality but lacks cohesion.
Character & Emotion
CHARACTER: Acting is a strong point, especially Aditya Roy Kapur’s nuanced performance, which many describe as career‑best, and Ronit Roy’s effective supporting role. Mrunal Thakur’s portrayal receives mixed feedback, ranging from adequate to disappointing, reflecting uneven character depth. Chemistry among the leads contributes to moments of authenticity, though occasional miscasting hampers emotional resonance. In sum, the cast delivers generally solid performances with notable variability.
Story & Flow
STORY: The narrative presents an intriguing premise with twin identities and a murder mystery that sustains suspense for much of the film. Viewers appreciate the originality of the twist and the engaging pacing in the early act. Nonetheless, several critiques point to confusing plot elements, unexplained motives, and predictable twists that weaken coherence. Overall, the story is compelling yet marred by structural flaws.
Sensory Experience
SENSORY: The film’s visual style is praised for atmospheric lighting and dynamic camera work that heightens tension, while the soundtrack effectively underscores key moments. Conversely, the inclusion of multiple song sequences is criticized for disrupting rhythm and diminishing immersion. Sound design, though competent, does not consistently elevate the viewing experience. Consequently, the sensory elements provide moments of impact but are offset by uneven execution.
Rewatch Factor
REWATCH: The film offers enough twists and a satisfying climax to warrant a single viewing, especially for fans of thriller conventions. However, the protracted flashbacks, repetitive song interludes, and uneven pacing reduce incentive for repeat watches. While some viewers may revisit for Aditya Roy Kapur’s performance, the overall experience feels more suited to a one‑time weekend watch.

Shivani Mathur leads a murder investigation when a man is found dead in his home, initially treated as a burglary. A neighbor’s selfie captures the suspect, and ACP Dhiren Yadav identifies the man as Arjun Sehgal, a successful real estate developer, and orders his arrest. Yet doubt arises when another man, Sooraj Rana, is taken into custody for disorderly conduct—he bears a striking resemblance to Arjun.
Three months earlier, Arjun was focused on closing real estate deals and was engaged to Janhvi, a perceptive film critic who often comments on the city’s social scene. Meanwhile, Sooraj, a small-time conman, finds himself in trouble after scamming a mob boss. The boss kidnaps his friend Chaddi and demands ₹2 million as a ransom. Desperate, Sooraj scrambles to raise the money but fails.
On the night of the murder, both Arjun and Sooraj are shown with similar injuries, adding to the confusion. A DNA test confirms they are identical twins who were separated as children when their parents separated. ACP Yadav, who harbors a personal vendetta against Arjun, tries to steer the case in a direction favorable to his theory. After extensive questioning, neither twin provides a solid alibi.
Six months later, Shivani receives a missing-person file for Janhvi. It is discovered that she attended a school reunion before disappearing, and later, a message from her to Arjun states that she is marrying Akash. Further digging shows that Akash drugged and assaulted Janhvi and bribed officials to cover it up. Arjun, learning the truth, killed Akash. Sooraj, realizing the full gravity of the scheme, altered the crime scene to shield his brother.
With mounting questions and scant conclusive evidence, the case remains unresolved. Arjun Sehgal leaves Mumbai, unable to stay in a city haunted by Janhvi’s death, and leaves Sooraj the keys to his house.
