Guest in the House 1944

Martha Proctor believes something evil has come to her home. Her nephew Dr. Dan Proctor arrives with his betrothed, Evelyn Heath, a frail invalid. Evelyn is introduced to Aunt Martha as well as Dan’s older brother Douglas Proctor, an illustrator, along with Douglas’s wife Ann Proctor and his model, Miriam Blake. The women sympathy with Evelyn’s struggles, recognizing the hard life she has endured.

Evelyn carries the weight of hysteria and a pronounced fear of birds, and she keeps a secret diary in which she mocks Aunt Martha for her spinsterhood, sneers at her fiancé Dan, and openly expresses a longing for Douglas. As she schemes to win over Douglas Proctor, she casts suspicion on Dan by feigning jealousy to pressure him out of the picture, and she targets Miriam, whom she sees as a rival. Her whispered gossip travels back to Ann, sowing doubt and driving Miriam away.

Douglas finds himself pulled into conflict with Ann, pulled apart by Evelyn’s calculated manipulation. Ann and her child depart to catch the train, and Evelyn destroys the farewell note Ann has written to him, severing a final tie. Evelyn believes she has finally secured Douglas’s affection, but when the truth of the manipulation comes to light, Douglas rushes back to intervene on Ann’s behalf. They return to the house and confront Evelyn, promising that if she renounces her plan to marry Dan, they will arrange for her to receive care in an asylum rather than face further turmoil. Instead, Evelyn dupes Dan into returning home to marry her immediately.

As Ann and Douglas separate Dan from Evelyn’s influence, Martha Proctor uses Evelyn’s deep-seated terror of birds to push her into another hysteria. The scene escalates in a heated, claustrophobic climax, with Evelyn fleeing the house in a wild scream, her fear culminating in a fatal plunge from a cliff. The house, once a sanctuary, becomes the scene of a grim tragedy born from manipulation, desire, and fear, leaving the surviving characters to confront the consequences of the web they all wove.
