In this drama, Agatha Reed, Joan Crawford, a powerful congresswoman, returns to her alma mater to receive an honorary degree. The college’s board of trustees does not know that years earlier she was expelled for an all-night date with the university’s president, Dr. James Merrill, Robert Young. The reunion rekindles old feelings as the two cross paths on campus, bringing a tangle of history, ambition, and attraction to the surface.
Matt Cole, a Life magazine photographer, Frank Lovejoy, had been involved with Agatha overseas during World War II, but she ended the relationship abruptly. Cole follows her back to the school, convinced that her renewed interest in Merrill is a relic from her girlhood rather than a fresh spark. His pursuit threads through the campus as Agatha balances public service, personal longing, and the pressure of a past that could surface at any moment.
As Agatha navigates this complicated emotional landscape, she becomes embroiled in a heated debate over progressive teaching methods. On one side is Dr. Pitt, and on the other, board trustee Claude Griswold, Howard St. John, and his wife Ellen Griswold, Lurene Tuttle. The conflict centers around a film Agatha commissioned that argues against intellectual censorship and aims to celebrate her legacy. Griswold tries to force Merrill to cancel the screening, mounting pressure that pits loyalty to institutional tradition against the pursuit of intellectual freedom.
Merrill, who is reluctant to stand up to Griswold, agrees to show the film only if Agatha’s expulsion from years past is not revealed. Yet he cannot fully back that stance and ends up deceiving his own daughter, Virginia Merrill, Janice Rule, about the real reason behind the decision. The escalating misunderstandings complicate bonds, blur loyalties, and test the characters’ sense of duty and desire.
Through it all, Agatha must reckon with what she truly wants: the public honor she’s sought for so long, or the private connection that could redefine her future. The interplay of old passions, a fight for academic freedom, and the weight of past choices drive the narrative toward a poignant realization. In the end, Agatha recognizes that her future lies with Matt Cole and that she must let go of the lingering feelings for Merrill, choosing a path that aligns with who she is now rather than who she was then.
