Prakash, Jeetendra, educated yet unemployed, struggles to secure a steady job in a world where corruption often blocks honest effort. He comes from a large family led by his father, Satya Narain, a head clerk who sustains two sons, two daughters, a wife, and an aging mother. The family’s hopes rest on the eldest son, Prakash, but in this era of rampant corruption, he fails to land a respectable job and ends up taking up work as an ironsmith, learning to see the dignity in labor even when society doubts it.

Trouble widens its grip when a loan Satya Narain had taken to arrange his eldest daughter’s marriage is stolen by a brother-in-law who has moved in like a parasite, demanding the unpaid dowry. Satya Narain dies of a heart attack, and the burden of the family falls squarely on Prakash, who is forced to confront a stark choice: sell their only possession—their house—to settle the debts. The devoted maidservant Radhika, Sridevi, has stood by the family and harbors love for Prakash, adding a layer of personal stake to the family’s struggle.

Satya Narain’s elder daughter runs away from the house, and Prakash searches for her and arranges her marriage, trying to keep the family afloat despite mounting pressure. Chandan, Gulshan Grover, the younger brother and the black sheep of the clan, does his best to sabotage the family from within. His reckless schemes threaten to undo everything Prakash is trying to hold together, and the tension reaches a peak when his rowdy friends target him.
