Based on Lieutenant Commander John McCain’s own account, the film recounts his harrowing five‑and‑a‑half years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam during the Vietnam War, weaving those experiences with vivid memories of his childhood in a family steeped in military service and tradition.

John McCain [Shawn Hatosy] flies his jet from a carrier on a bombing mission over Hanoi, North Vietnam. As a warning buzzer signals incoming missiles, McCain stays with the bomb drop, but is hit by a missile. He lands in the water and is pulled ashore by an angry mob, and taken prisoner. Asked to give information, he gives out the names of the Green Bay Packers rather than of his squadron.
In flashbacks, the film sketches a lineage of military service and family pride. A father figure explains how his submarine escaped destruction in World War II and reassures him not to sweat the grades, noting that both his father and grandfather “really fooled them” by rising to admiral despite doing poorly in school.
In prison, McCain witnesses fellow prisoners subjected to torture, while he also observes a couple who appear to have decided to cooperate with the enemy. The atmosphere is harsh and coercive, and survival hinges on small acts of restraint and stubborn endurance.
McCain is offered release early, a concession tied to the notion that his father commands U.S. forces in the Pacific. He refuses the deal, choosing loyalty and a refusal to cooperate over an easier exit, and he endures the consequences that follow.
During a stepped-up bombing campaign, the prisoners break into song, Silent Night, a quiet moment of solidarity amid the brutality. Negotiations eventually lead to the release of the prisoners and a return trip home, marking a hard-won, symbolic homecoming born of grit, conviction, and a steadfast adherence to personal code.
