Mike Gilbert is serving time at San Quentin prison in California. His sentence isn’t long to go, but when fellow convict Roy Gruber hatches a breakout and asks for help stealing a plane to fly them out of the country, sharing a pile of $120,000 stolen money Gruber has hidden, Gilbert decides to go along, driven by the rumor that his wife Georgie Gilbert wants a divorce. The prospect of freedom is tempting, and the plan hinges on a risky, two-person escape that could rewrite their lives forever.

During their attempt, Hap Graham steps into the mix, stubbornly trying to tag along. The plane’s capacity is strictly two passengers, so Gruber aggressively shoves Hap aside, leaving him injured on the ground. With fuel running low and the route limited to a rural stretch, the fugitives push their luck: Gruber knocks a man unconscious and steals his truck to press their escape forward. The tension tightens as the group races toward a hidden stash and a new horizon, each man weighing loyalty, fear, and the lure of money against the peril of capture.

Mike reaches out to his sister-in-law, Robbie, who makes a valiant, but ultimately frustrated, bid to enlist Georgie’s aid for her husband’s escape plan. The money, as it turns out, is buried in Los Angeles by Gruber’s father, Curly Gruber, a detail that deepens the family web and complicates the chase. With law enforcement on edge, Gruber recruits a friend named Richie to help recover the hidden fortune, intensifying the danger as the net closes in.

As the fugitives push further, Hap reappears, seeking revenge and a second chance, but his return ends in tragedy when he is killed and Richie is badly hurt. Robbie continues to ride with the group as they cross the border into Tijuana, a perilous shift that underscores how quickly loyalties fracture under pressure. Gruber’s ruthlessness deepens when he decides to seize Robbie and eliminates his ally Richie, signaling a ruthless turn in the pursuit and the widening consequences of the plan’s failure.

With time running out, Mike is faced with a stark choice: help the border patrol trap his former ally and rescue the girl he’s entangled with, or risk everything to keep moving toward an uncertain freedom. In the heated, harrowing aftermath, Mike’s decisive actions save a Mexican policeman’s life and earn a measured, if begrudging, courtesy from the authorities as they prepare to return him to jail. Robbie, waiting by the rails of fate, promises to remain steadfast, hoping for a reunion that may or may not come, while the law’s verdict lingers like a shadow over a narrowly averted catastrophe.
