Kumaran is a hardworking and principled man whose strong sense of justice often rubs people the wrong way. He falls in love with his first cousin, Ponni, who leads a leisurely, comfortable life working in a grand mansion. Ponni’s younger sister, Kamatchi, adores Kumaran, though he doesn’t take her seriously as a potential partner. Their father, Vishwanathan, pushes for a marriage between Kumaran and Ponni, and although Ponni is reluctant, she agrees to marry him. A daughter, Meena, is born after a year, and the new responsibilities of married life begin to wear on Ponni.

Over time, Ponni grows to detest the burdens of her domestic duties. When Ponni’s former employer dies of old age, she goes to visit the son of the family, who is also unhappy in his marriage. Their funeral conversation about their shared misery becomes a catalyst for a drastic decision: they resolve to elope. Ponni’s departure leads to her family’s drastic reaction—she is disowned, and Kamatchi is pressed into Kumaran’s life as his wife. Kumaran, initially hesitant, is persuaded by his father-in-law and agrees to marry Kamatchi. This new arrangement blossoms into a settled, content life for Kumaran and Kamatchi, who raise their child together.

Ponni soon realizes the gravity of her earlier mistake. Distressed by her own actions, she ends the affair with her eloped partner but remains faithful to Kumaran, choosing not to engage in any further liaison. A man connected to Ponni’s life helps secure her a modest house near the village, giving her a place to spend the rest of her days. She reconnects with her daughter, though Kamatchi—her sister, who disapproves of Ponni’s choices—orders that the child not meet Ponni again.

Kumaran learns of Ponni’s unwavering faithfulness and makes a priestly visit to her on her deathbed. She passes away beside him, reflecting on the life she led. Despite a warning from his father-in-law that attending Ponni’s funeral could cost him his place in the village, Kumaran chooses to attend. He performs the last rites for Ponni alongside their daughter and Kamatchi, honoring the bond that endured even through hardship.
