Elmer, the Great 1933

Elmer Kane Joe E. Brown is a rookie ballplayer with the Chicago Cubs, a man whose swagger sits beside a noticeable naivete and a hearty appetite for life. His teammates love playing practical jokes on him, yet his rising talent on the field makes him indispensable to the Cubs’ plans. To keep him from bolting for home, the front office quietly hides letters from his hometown sweetheart Nellie Patricia Ellis, preserving the illusion that Elmer is settled with the team.

When Nellie comes to visit, she finds [Evelyn] Evelyn, the glamorous actress Claire Dodd, in a seemingly innocent but compromising moment with Elmer. Disappointed, Nellie turns her back, and Elmer, feeling alone and misjudged, slips into a crooked gambling house to escape his troubles. There he accrues an enormous gambling debt, and the casino owner offers a blunt deal: the debt will be forgotten if Elmer agrees to throw the deciding World Series game (the World Serious).

A brutal brawl with the gambler lands Elmer in jail, where he learns of a cruel practical joke that had been played on him. Out of spite, he initially refuses to participate in the Big Game. A jailhouse visit from the gamblers heightens the pressure, but after a reconciliation with Nellie, Elmer returns to the field and proves his loyalty by playing with renewed resolve. He shows that he has been true-blue all along, even under severe temptation, and his performance helps steer the outcome of the pivotal game.

Based on the 1928 Broadway play by Ring Lardner and George M. Cohan, Elmer, the Great betrays its stage origins in its slower, static early scenes, before building to a climactic, rain-soaked ball game that tests loyalty, character, and sportsmanship.
