Maurice Black

Maurice Black (January 14, 1891 – January 18, 1938) was an American character actor whose career spanned the formative years of sound cinema. Born in Queens, New York City, Black grew up absorbing the myriad dialects of the bustling metropolis, a skill that later allowed him to inhabit a wide range of immigrant and gangster roles with convincing authenticity. He entered the film industry in 1928 and quickly became a reliable presence in studios, often cast as the colorful side‑kick, tavern proprietor, or sleazy henchman that populated the gritty urban narratives of the early 1930s. His ability to shift accents and mannerisms made him a go‑to performer for directors seeking realism in depictions of New York’s underworld, and he appeared in more than one hundred films within a decade of work. Notable performances include the sly “Diamond Louie” in The Front Page (1931), the shady Greek barber in Smart Money (1931), the menacing gangster “Little Arnie Lorch” in the classic Little Caesar (1931), and a brief but memorable turn as a gypsy in The Bride of Frankenstein (1935). Black also shared the screen with legendary duos such as Laurel and Hardy in Bonnie Scotland (1935), showcasing his versatility in both drama and comedy.

Despite his prolific output, Black’s life was tragically short. He married Edythe Raynore, but the couple’s personal life remains largely undocumented, and no children are recorded. In early 1938, amid a prolific summer of work, he contracted pneumonia and died in Hollywood at the age of forty‑seven, just four days after his birthday. His final screen appearance was a small uncredited role in Walking Down Broadway (1938). Today, film historians remember Maurice Black for his steady contributions to the golden age of Hollywood, his linguistic flair, and his unmistakable presence in the era’s most iconic crime and horror pictures.
