Bertie “Duke” Gray is a counterfeiter who has been sentenced to ten years in prison. Facing a future behind bars, he accepts his fate and settles into the rhythm of prison life, where routines, guards, and the quiet endurance of confinement shape each day. The story traces how Gray navigates this harsh environment while still clinging to a sense of dignity, even as the tension outside the walls begins to close in.

Gray’s friend Bud Leonard, a young man who cannot tolerate prison because he is in love with Mary Dane and misses her terribly. While Bud is imprisoned, Lou Rinaldo, the man who framed him, begins pursuing Mary Dane, injecting a dangerous momentum into the inmates’ world. Bud learns that he will be sent to work on a road gang, a detail that raises the stakes for any plan to break free and tests the limits of loyalty, love, and survival.

Mary tempts Bud to escape, and she takes a job at a farmhouse where convicts often eat, hoping to catch a glimpse of him. Rinaldo traces her to the house and crafts a scheme to remove Bud from the picture so he can have Mary to himself. He persuades Bud and a prisoner named King Callahan, whom Rinaldo had previously framed, that an escape is worth the risk, hoping to lure the authorities into a trap. The plan unfolds with dangerous miscalculations and mounting pressure, as trust frays and every decision could prove fatal.

Mary prevents Bud’s escape, but Callahan walks into the trap and is killed in the ensuing chaos. In a final act to protect Bud, who is nearing release, Gray betrays Rinaldo by providing evidence that could land him back in prison for good. It is a costly sacrifice, but Gray takes it with a quiet gravity, convinced that Mary will be with the man she truly loves once the dust settles.
