Elmer attempts to elope with his fiancée, escaping her parents in a car owned by a wanted gangster. After a police alert, they ditch the car, hide near a farmhouse, and are broadcast on the farmer’s radio. They hitchhike, are taken by two policemen, flee into a railroad yard and board a refrigerated train, then decide to turn themselves in just as the real criminals are caught.

After midnight, a mob boss orders his crew to fetch aspirin to treat a pounding toothache, and they break into a closed drug store to satisfy the demand. Across the street, Elmer waits outside his girlfriend, Elmer’s Girl, as they plan to elope and start a new life together. The moment the heist is spotted, the robbers escape in Elmer’s car, while the unsuspecting couple inadvertendly slips away in the police car. An all-points alert goes out, and suddenly they find themselves fugitives, racing to outrun a city-wide misunderstanding.
