Domenicos Theotokopoulos, Nick Ashdon best known as El Greco, is depicted as a fiercely independent 16th-century Greek artist who leaves Crete—then part of the Republic of Venice—and travels to Venice and later Toledo in search of freedom and love. Throughout this journey, he faces the looming shadow of the Spanish Inquisition, yet his creative vision and inner resolve push him to rise above the forces of barbarity and ignorance that surround him.

Born on the island of Crete, where the young Domenicos falls in love with Francesca, Dimitra Matsouka, daughter of the Venetian governor of Crete, a romance that fuels his longing. But his father’s involvement in a political rebellion forces Domenicos to leave the island and seek a fresh start in Venice, chasing both his art and the memory of Francesca.

In Venice, he crosses paths with Titian, the celebrated painter, Sotiris Moustakas, and with Fernando Niño de Guevara, the Spanish priest who becomes a central figure in the tale, Juan Diego Botto. Guevara’s presence introduces a tense dynamic—an uneasy mix of fascination, jurisdiction, and spiritual power—that unsettles Domenicos as he wrestles with his Greek roots and personal demons.

Best of all, the film frames these conflicts as the moment where Domenicos is summoned before the Inquisition, defending himself against charges of heresy as he fights to preserve his voice as an artist. The narrative unfolds largely through extended flashbacks, letting viewers see how memory and invention braid together while Domenicos writes his own story from within imprisonment and awaiting execution.

It should be noted that the film’s story is fictional; El Greco was never prosecuted by the Inquisition. Yet the drama explores a striking clash between freedom of expression and institutional power, while acknowledging that the painter did receive significant commissions from high-ranking Inquisition figures in history.
