After the loss of his vessel, Varvakis travels to Saint Petersburg to seek an audience with the formidable Empress Catherine II of Russia Catherine Deneuve. There, he secures compensation for his ruined ship and is granted the right to fish freely in the Caspian Sea, a permission that opens vast opportunities. With his superb navigational skills and steadfast seamanship, he quickly dominates the Caspian trade routes, accumulating wealth through a combination of risk, savvy business sense, and ceaseless hard work.

The turning point of Varvakis’s fortune comes when he encounters the extraordinary market potential of Beluga Sturgeon caviar. Recognizing the luxury appeal and the growing demand for this delicacy, he pivots from general trade to a specialized caviar business. What begins as prudent diversification soon blossoms into immense wealth, transforming him from a seafaring trader into one of the era’s notable magnates. His fortunes are not kept private; instead, he invests in the lives of others, channeling resources to improve conditions for Russians and Greeks living along the Black Sea coasts.

As the decades pass, Varvakis does not retreat from public life. He becomes a member of Filiki Eteria, a secret organization that would play a crucial role in shaping the future of Greece and its struggle for independence from Ottoman rule. Varvakis dies in 1825 in Zante (Zakynthos), during the Greek War of Independence.
