Ed Chilton, Steve Buscemi inherits his family’s hardware store after the death of his beloved mother, Mabel Chilton, Miriam Margolyes. He lives with his maternal uncle, Ned Beatty, who seems pleased that his sister is out of his life.
One morning, Ed is approached at work by salesman John Glover as A. J. Pattle, who offers to resurrect Ed’s mother for $1000. Ed is initially skeptical, but Pattle notes the fee need not be paid up front, which makes the bizarre offer feel more plausible than it should.
Ed accepts the proposal, a decision that disturbs Uncle Benny and unsettles the quiet routine of the hardware shop. Over time, Mabel’s behavior grows increasingly bizarre and unsettling. She begins scaring the neighbors and even chases dogs with a knife, forcing Ed to admit that something is terribly wrong.
Ed seeks help from Pattle, but the salesman demands more money to continue the process. Faced with a painful truth, Ed realizes he must move on and let his mother die, if she cannot truly be brought back to life.
In a grim turn, Ed acts in self-defense and decapitates Mabel. He says farewell to her, but the still-living head bites him on the lip when he gives her a final kiss. Disgusted, he hurls the head into the grave, finally freeing himself from his overbearing mother.
