Dragonworld 1994

Set in modern times, a five-year-old Johnny McGowan Courtland Mead travels to Scotland to live at his grandfather’s castle after losing both parents in a traffic collision. At the magical wish tree on the estate, he conjures a friend—a baby dragon he names Yowler. Over the next fifteen years, the two grow up together; Johnny matures while Yowler swells to full size, a constant companion in the shifting tapestry of his life. When grandfather John McGowan Alastair Mackenzie passes away, a documentary filmmaker, Bob Armstrong John Calvin, his daughter Beth Armstrong Brittney Powell, and their pilot Brownie McGee Jim Dunk stumble upon Yowler wandering the estate.

Driven by a hunger for fame and money, Bob convinces John McGowan to “rent” Yowler to a local corrupt businessman, Lester McIntyre John Woodvine. John, partly coerced by the prospect of finally paying off mounting taxes on the castle, agrees to let Lester take Yowler. He also finds himself drawn in part to Beth, a connection that muddys the lines between duty and desire. Soon, Yowler is spirited away to a purpose-built amusement park crafted around his presence, where the dragon is made to perform and endure harassment in the name of profit.

The arrangement quickly reveals its true colors: Lester intends to exploit Yowler for commercial gain, ignoring the creature’s welfare and the gentle bond he shares with Johnny. In the face of this betrayal, John and his close circle—Beth and Brownie—begin to map out a plan to reclaim Yowler and end the exploitation. The story unfolds as a quiet, patient confrontation between a family’s duty to protect a friend and the corrosive lure of fame and wealth.
