As the tumultuous events of World War II came to an end in 1944, Father Lankester Merrin faced a harrowing confrontation with the sinister elements of mankind when he was coerced by Nazi SS Lieutenant Kessel into participating in brutal executions in occupied Holland. This grim experience shattered Merrin’s faith, leading him on an unexpected path that found him years later, in 1947, as an archaeologist exploring the desolate Turkana region in British Kenya. There, he began excavating a Byzantine church built long before Christianity found its way to Africa.
