Soichi Negishi, Ken’ichi Matsuyama, is a shy young musician who dreams of a pop career, but the realities of making ends meet push him to front the brutal blackened death metal band Detroit Metal City. On stage, he dons the onstage persona Johannes Krauser II, a demon from hell said to have harmed his parents, a figure who headlines the band’s performances as a parodic exaggeration of the genre. The songs of DMC often celebrate the kind of immoral and illegal behavior that Negishi’s real life would never permit, or narrate Krauser’s criminal exploits in a sly, satirical take on metal’s conventions.
