An eruption of volcanic fury followed by a devastating earthquake reshapes a harsh world, opening a yawning crevasse that swallows many members of the Dark Tribe. In the chaos, the tribal leader is slain, sparking a brutal contest for power between two survivors, Mak Brian O’Shaughnessy and Zen Frank Hayden. The conflict ends with Mak emerging victorious, and he leads the remaining tribespeople across scorching plains in search of a new home. Their long journey brings them to a valley inhabited by a tribe of fair-haired people, where the imposing leader offers Noo Sue Wilson as a wife for Mak. Mak, however, proposes a trade of a girl in exchange, only to discover that she already has a mate, a twist that tests the newcomers’ resolve and sets the tone for future alliances and rivalries.

The Dark Tribe moves on, and after many trials they settle in a fertile valley where life begins to flourish. Noo gives birth to twin boys—one dark-haired, one fair-haired—while, on the same day, another woman brings forth a mute girl. The tribe initially considers sacrificing the mute child, but a dramatic lightning strike convinces the tribe’s old witch to adopt her as an apprentice instead, setting up a future relationship that will echo through the generations.

Years pass, and the twins grow into adolescence. The dark-haired Rool and the fair-haired Toomak contend for their father Mak’s attention, revealing a brewing tension that mirrors larger rivalries. Bravely, Rool attempts a brutal act against the mute girl, who manages to escape but falls into the clutches of a marauding tribe. Toomak steps forward, leading Mak and the other tribesmen to the marauders’ cave; a fierce battle ensues, and the marauders’ chief is slain by Toomak. In a decisive turn, Toomak rescues the mute girl and takes the defeated chief’s daughter, Nala Julie Ege, as his wife. With this victory, Mak names Toomak as his successor as tribal chief, though Mak dies from wounds sustained in the fighting.

Rool rejects the decision and challenges Toomak in a ritualized duel. Although Toomak presses toward victory, he spares his brother’s life at a crucial moment, choosing restraint over finality. The young chief then decides to depart, taking Nala and roughly half the tribe with him in search of a more peaceful future. Consumed by resentment, Rool sets out to track them down, and he and his men face a hostile forest tribe, only to be rescued by Toomak in a display of unlikely alliance and strength.

Undeterred, Rool abducts Nala once more, triggering a high-stakes chase across cliffs and canyons. At the summit of a craggy precipice, Rool ties Nala to a pyre as Toomak closes in for a fateful duel. The struggle culminates with Nala managing to free herself, only to be seized again by a constricting python. In a desperate clash, Toomak saves Nala but seems doomed himself when Rool seems poised to strike. At that moment, the mute girl—whose life was forever altered by the old witch’s influence—stabs Rool, while an effigy of Rool is crushed by the old witch’s power. Enraged and defeated, Rool plunges to his death from the cliff, ending a long and bitter feud that began with a trail of blood and ambition.
