Melanie Adams Cheryl Ladd is a divorced mother who had twins Valerie Adams and Jessica Adams when she was nineteen, and later built a reputation as a successful news correspondent in New York City. For a recent story, she travels to Los Angeles to cover a sick, yet hopeful girl, and there she is instantly drawn to the girl’s doctor, Peter Hallam Michael Nouri. Peter is a widowed father of three children—Mark Hallam [Chris Gartin], 18; Pam Hallam [Ami Foster], 15; and Matt Hallam [Joseph Gordon-Levitt], 8—whose mother died after refusing treatment for pulmonary hypertension. The family is still grieving, with Pam feeling the weight of the loss more acutely than the others.

After a brief romance, Melanie and Peter part ways, only to realize they can’t live without each other. Melanie reluctantly leaves her job to move with Valerie and Jessica, who is now 16, to Los Angeles. In the City of Angels she becomes a co-host on a local news program, but her arrival stirs friction with her new co-host, Paul Stevenson [James Sloyan], who resents the competition and begins to sabotage her chances. Despite the tension, Melanie and Peter marry, and the couple faces the immediate challenge of blending two families and adjusting to a Californian lifestyle.

The family’s adjustment is rocky from the start. Valerie falls in love with Mark Hallam [Chris Gartin], and Valerie becomes pregnant, forcing them to confront adult issues early on. They even seek out an inexperienced downtown doctor for an abortion, a decision that weighs heavily on everyone when Valerie becomes very sick and Mark must break the news to Melanie and Peter about the abortion. The revelation brings to light the lingering influence of Peter’s late wife on the household, a factor that complicates Melanie’s sense of belonging.

Meanwhile, Pam and the household maid Mrs. Hahn [Liz Sheridan] treat Melanie poorly, resisting her attempts to move into the family space and forcing the twins to share a spare room. Melanie herself faces a pivotal moment when she discovers she is pregnant again; this time Peter is delighted, but the older children react with horror and resentment. The fear of losing time with Valerie and Jessica prompts Melanie to consider abortion once more, and Peter suspects that her motive is tied to her career ambitions. The couple’s disagreement reaches a breaking point, and Melanie ultimately packs her things and leaves for San Francisco.

The separation triggers a broader reckoning within the family. Peter dismisses Mrs. Hahn for not accepting Melanie as his wife and even removes his late wife’s portrait from the wall, signaling a shift in the household’s dynamics. After some soul-searching, Peter persuades Melanie to return, and the family members apologize to one another, including Pam, who recognizes the damage their discord has caused. The reunified household decides to relocate to a larger house to accommodate everyone’s needs, and Peter hires Raquel [Betty Carvalho], the New York maid, to help manage the daily life of the blended family.

In the wake of these changes, Melanie gives birth to twins—a girl named Karen and a boy named Richard—adding new life to a family that has weathered turmoil, heartache, and reconciliation. The story tracks the resilience of a woman who balances career and motherhood, the evolving bonds among stepfamily members, and the delicate negotiations required to forge a home where each member’s grief, hopes, and dreams can find space to grow.
