Bill Grant, John Ritter, is a successful television producer working on the soap opera A Life Worth Living. A recently divorced man who does not see his sons very often, he navigates the challenges of blending work and family life with warmth and a quiet resilience. Adrian Towers, Polly Draper, is a driven writer for the news, married to Steven Towers, Kevin Kilner. Steven carries the scars of an abusive childhood and has a wary view of having children. When Adrian reveals she is pregnant, he pushes for an abortion, forcing her to consider a path she is not ready for. She reluctantly agrees to discuss termination but cannot go through with it. When Steven finds out, he leaves her and threatens divorce if the baby is born. The tension between their past and the future they might share hangs over Adrian as she copes with the news.
Adrian struggles to talk about what happened and keeps her pregnancy contained as she gradually crosses paths with Bill. The two develop a connection, though she is still healing from the divorce and unsure about whether she can open her heart again, especially with a new life on the way. On a camping trip with his two sons, Tommy Grant, Christian Cousins, and Adam Grant, Victor DiMattia, Adrian begins to see how much she likes kids. Bill speaks of the moment he first held his own sons and the way that moment changed him, a memory that resonates with Adrian as her pregnancy progresses. Yet she is mindful that marriage to Bill would require a future she’s not sure she can fully envision while still technically married to Steven.
After the accident that brings them closer, the couple becomes more than friends. The next morning, Tommy is nearly struck by a car, and Adrian leaps to push him away, only to be hit herself. She is hospitalized and worries about a possible miscarriage, a fear that deepens the bond between Bill and Adrian as he steps in to support her and the unborn child. Bill’s concern grows into affection, but he admits a fear of falling in love again and the possibility that Adrian might still return to Steven. Meanwhile, Adrian’s lawyer reveals Steven’s plan to avoid responsibility in exchange for financial support, leaving her torn between protecting her child and accepting a future with Bill. She refuses to sign a contract that would shield Steven from parenting duties, insisting that he should meet the baby before any agreement.
With the threats and uncertainties behind them, Adrian and Bill grow closer and ultimately start a life together. The days pass, and after more hospitalization for contractions, Adrian approaches the end of her marriage to Steven and accepts Bill’s proposal. She makes it clear that she is not fully over Steven, but that her connection with Bill offers a different, hopeful future. On Christmas Eve, Adrian gives birth to a boy named Sam, and Steven agrees to see their child and even contemplates renewing their relationship for the sake of the baby. Adrian rejects that idea; Bill keeps a respectful distance as she charts a path forward. In the end, love proves steadfast, and Bill and Adrian find each other again, culminating in a secure partnership built on trust, shared responsibility, and a promise of family.
