Roberto ‘El Kid’ Terranova David Silva, a snow cone vendor in La Lagunilla, stirs up trouble by sparking a brawl during a boxing match in which he participates. After slipping away from the chaos, he returns home, where his mother Doña Gracia urges him to avoid trouble and lead a calmer life. Promising to stay out of fights, Roberto settles back into his quiet routine alongside his close friend Fernando Soto and his girlfriend Amanda del Llano.
That calm is shattered when he intervenes in a street altercation to defend a mistreated boy, catching the eye of boxing manager Uncle Rosas, who sees real potential in him and offers to train him as a professional fighter. Under Rosas’s guidance, Juan Zubieta, the world’s fifth-ranked lightweight, is defeated by Roberto’s rising skill after their earlier meeting at a fair. In a subsequent match against Joe Ronda, the English-speaking opponent, Roberto becomes distracted by the sight of Ronda’s American girlfriend and is knocked out. Discouraged, he contemplates retirement, but Lupita persuades him to press on. After knocking out a Filipino opponent, Roberto attracts the attention of Susana, a wealthy socialite who seduces him. Rosas then arranges a tour in the United States, which Roberto reluctantly accepts, while Susana loses interest and departs for Acapulco.
Upon his return to Mexico, Susana rejects him. He causes a scene at her home, which leads to his arrest. Rosas, for undisclosed reasons, arranges to keep him in jail.
