In a warm, music-filled setting at Camp Rock, Mitchie Torres is a shy aspiring singer whose family cannot comfortably afford the camp fees. Her mother, Connie Torres, works as a chef and lands a catering job for the camp, which helps Mitchie attend at a discounted rate. When not performing, Connie asks Mitchie to help in the kitchen, blending family duty with a chance to follow her dreams.

On arrival, Mitchie soon meets fellow camper Caitlyn Geller, a determined up-and-coming music producer in her own right. Into this mix returns Shane Gray, the spoiled lead singer of the pop trio Connect 3, who comes back to Camp Rock to rehab his public image. As a dance instructor, he’s also expected to record a song with the winner of Final Jam, the camp’s closing singing competition. One moment, Shane overhears Mitchie singing in a hall and, unable to see her, becomes obsessed with finding the girl with “the voice.”

During Opening Jam, Camp Rock reveals a social divide: many campers are rich or well-connected. To fit in, Mitchie lies to Tess Tyler, the stylish daughter of a famous star, claiming her mother is the president of the Chinese department of Hot Tunes TV. Tess is impressed and invites Mitchie to join her circle, much to Caitlyn’s disappointment, as Mitchie’s secret remains hidden.

At lunch, a heated clash between Tess and Caitlyn escalates into a food fight. Brown Cesario, the camp director and Shane’s uncle, punishes Caitlyn by docking her kitchen duties. Mitchie worries Caitlyn will expose her secret and stays quiet, which irritates Caitlyn but also deepens the bond between Mitchie and her friend.

Shane shares a new, stylistically different song with Mitchie, hinting at a direction different from his Connect 3 days. Mitchie loves the track, even as Caitlyn arrives in the kitchen and learns about Mitchie’s secret. The two argue but eventually reconcile at Pajama Jam, a pajama party music showcase, after Mitchie stands up to Tess when Tess tries to upstage Caitlyn’s performance.

Jealousy flares as Tess follows Mitchie and discovers her secret. Tess then reveals Mitchie to the other campers; Shane, believing Mitchie lied to be with him because of fame, ends their friendship, and Mitchie becomes ostracized at camp. Tess even deduces that Mitchie is the mysterious singer.

On the eve of Final Jam, Tess frames Mitchie and Caitlyn for stealing her bracelet, and Brown bans them from all camp activities until the end of Final Jam. At the Final Jam, judged by Connect 3, Peggy Dupree and Ella Pador oppose Tess and opt not to perform with her as planned. Ella takes the stage with Barron James and Sander Loyer, while Tess falters during her performance after T.J. Tyler attends and takes a call, retreating backstage in tears.

Peggy delivers a solo closing act and is named the winner. When Brown announces the end of Final Jam, Mitchie and Caitlyn trigger the spotlights and are allowed to continue, proving their ban was only until the end of Final Jam. As Mitchie sings, Shane realizes she is the mysterious singer, and the two reconcile on stage with a duet.

Backstage, Tess apologizes to Peggy and Ella, then confesses to Brown that she staged the bracelet theft. The extended ending hints at a brighter future: Caitlyn invites Mitchie, Tess, Peggy, and Ella to a recording studio she built in her garage, offering an ultimate space where their talents can grow together.
