The story acts as a prequel that reveals how the Jelly Cabin trio first met. When Lazlo encounters a bear and disappears, the camp quickly assumes he was mauled, but Clam and Raj refuse to accept that explanation and search for him. Raj and Clam later narrate the events after they unfold.

The story opens with Lazlo missing, and Clam and Raj recount the events that led to this moment. The narrative kicks off by showing how Raj and Clam first cross paths and run into a common foe, Edward, the camp’s relentless bully. Most of the other campers fall in line behind Edward, and after a rough scuffle, Lazlo makes his appearance. What follows is a slow burn of tension: Edward’s growing resentment toward Lazlo and Lumpus’ growing dissatisfaction with the three new scouts’ behavior. In a bid to carve out a sense of belonging, they name their cabin after a jelly bean, and Lazlo even carves a totem pole to decorate their new home. When Lazlo hears an animal in distress, his instinct is to help, even as Clam and Raj decide not to join him.
[Lazlo] pulls a pinecone from the nose of a bear, earning the creature’s gratitude. The bear—who becomes known as Fluffy—follows Lazlo back to camp and is tucked away in Lazlo’s cabin. The tension spikes when Edward reports that Lazlo has abandoned camp, and Lumpus and Edward confront Lazlo, only to be met by Fluffy’s protective fury. Fluffy drives them away and chases them toward Lumpus’ cabin, while Lazlo reassures the bear and leads him to the mess hall. As everyone hides in Lumpus’ cabin, Lazlo trails Fluffy out of camp, and the next day a torn Bean Scout cap is found in a gory, flesh-like mess, prompting everyone to fear that Lazlo was devoured.
With Lazlo missing, Edward spins a web of lies to keep the camp’s respect, claiming he scared Fluffy off with his “skills” after witnessing the bear devour Lazlo. The tale is mirrored by Lumpus’ own fear-based struggles over Lazlo’s disappearance, driven less by worry and more by his fear of Commander Hoo-Ha. Eventually, the truth emerges when Raj and Clam pieced together the clue: the bear Lazlo brought to camp was brown, not black as Edward claimed. They eventually find Lazlo alive and well, working as a waiter in the Prickly Pines restaurant, Beef Lumberjacks. Lazlo explains the incident, but he’s hesitant to return to Camp Kidney, convinced the camp’s unfair rules will be waiting for him. Clam and Raj depart, though their visit has unwittingly persuaded Lazlo to come back.
When Lazlo returns, he discovers Fluffy ravaging the camp once more, this time with two pinecones still lodged in his nose. As the bear nears Edward, who pleads for mercy and is revealed as a liar, Lazlo steps in to calm the situation. He asks Edward to help Fluffy by removing the pinecones, and Edward complies. The camp erupts in cheers as Fluffy is freed. Fluffy thanks Lazlo with a hug before departing Camp Kidney.
The film closes with Lazlo stepping back into view, greeted with joy by [Clam] and [Raj], who confess they’d missed him terribly (and tease whether they’re recalling the Fluffy tale again).
