In the bustling metropolis of New York City, a charismatic magician named Hector P. Valenti (Hector) finds himself at a crossroads in his quest for stardom. Rejected time and again by national talent shows, Hector's fortunes take an unexpected turn when he stumbles upon an exotic pet store, where he discovers a singing baby crocodile that would change the course of his life forever. Naming this serendipitous find Lyle, Hector sees potential in the little reptile to catapult him to fame and fortune. With a bold move, he risks everything by placing his three-story Victorian brownstone house as collateral for their performance, but fate has other plans. As Lyle develops stage fright on the premiere night, Hector's dreams are dashed, and he loses the house. Forced to start anew, Hector leaves Lyle behind, feeling the sting of defeat.

Eighteen long months pass before a new chapter unfolds in the story of this peculiar pair. The Primms - Mr. and Mrs. Primm (the parents) and their young son Josh (the boy) - move into the once-thrice-hallowed halls of Hector's former home. Initially, Josh struggles to adapt to his new surroundings, but things take a dramatic turn when he stumbles upon Lyle, now grown into a magnificent specimen, living in the attic. The two form an unlikely bond as Lyle saves Josh from a mugger and showcases his remarkable singing talent. As time passes, the Primms grow fond of Lyle, bonding with him over shared hobbies.

However, not everyone is enamored with the primordial performer. Alistair Grumps (the neighbor), the Primm's cantankerous downstairs neighbor, becomes increasingly agitated by the commotion caused by Hector, Lyle, and the Primms. Seizing an opportunity to put an end to it all, he bribes Hector to abandon Lyle in exchange for financial relief from his debt woes. As a result, Lyle is mistakenly perceived as a menace and locked away at the local zoo.

Consumed by guilt for his role in Lyle's misfortune, Hector concocts a plan with Josh's help to break the singing sensation out of captivity. With their combined efforts, Hector and Lyle finally reconcile, and Lyle escapes with Josh to the talent show stage. As the lights shine down, Lyle overcomes his stage fright with Josh by his side, receiving thunderous applause from the audience and viewers for his remarkable vocal prowess.

As the clock strikes one month since Lyle's daring escape from captivity, the wheels of justice begin to turn in his favor. A court hearing is convened to determine whether Grumps' tyrannical grip on Lyle will be relinquished, or if the lovable canine will finally know the taste of freedom. The presiding judge, weighing the evidence presented by both parties, ultimately sides with Lyle when a surprising revelation emerges: Hector produces a dusty deed buried beneath Grumps' bed, revealing that the property was originally built and founded by Lyle's grandmother, who also established the New York City Zoo where Lyle spent his formative years. This newfound information not only exonerates Lyle but also casts doubt on Grumps' legitimacy to claim ownership of the premises.

With the trial concluded and Lyle declared free at last, the Primms mark their triumphant return with a well-deserved celebration. A vacation is planned, complete with Grumps' implied eviction from the property now a fait accompli. Meanwhile, Hector's fascination with a new protégé begins to blossom: Malfoy, a mesmerizing beatboxing rattlesnake owned by Trudy, Josh's friend and an animal enthusiast of great renown. As the Primms set off on their adventure, they do so with Lyle proudly in tow, his newfound freedom a beacon of hope for all those who have ever been held captive by the whims of others.
