In rural Wales, Brian Gittins is a lonely inventor whose days are filled with quirky contraptions that rarely work, hinting at the quiet ache of isolation he keeps hidden from the world. While scavenging scrap one day, he stumbles upon a mannequin’s head, a curious seed that sparks a bold idea: build a robot with its own spark of life. That same night, under a fierce thunderstorm, the machine awakens and wanders into his workshop, and Brian brings the stranger inside, turning a stumble of chance into a possibility he never expected.

The next morning, the robot has learned English by reading a dictionary and adopts the name Charles Petrescu. Brian begins spending time with the new companion, showing him the rough beauty of his land and the simple rhythms of living off the land. The childlike curiosity that Charles carries grows by leaps and bounds; he longs to explore beyond the fences and fields, but Brian’s cautious nature keeps him tethered close to home.

As Charles’s appetite for exploration swells, Brian starts driving him into town for small handyman jobs, always instructing Charles to stay inside the truck. Hazel, a local resident whose mother Brian sometimes helps, notices the unusual duo and, after a tense plea from Brian to keep the arrangement secret, is moved by the sight of their bond. She agrees to spend a day with them around a nearby lake, and she even agrees to go out with Brian, offering a delicate glimmer of romance amid the odd, hopeful friendship.

Yet the world outside grows more tempting for Charles, and his eagerness to see more conflicts with Brian’s protective loyalties, driving a quiet wedge between them. Trouble arrives when Eddie, a local bully, shows up with his two spoiled teenage daughters, attempting to buy Charles from Brian. When Brian refuses, Eddie shoves him to the ground, and the threat lingers like a storm cloud. The next day, Brian comes home to find his front door ripped from its hinges and Charles gone. They track him to Eddie’s place, but Eddie swears Charles came of his own accord. He plans to burn Charles in a bonfire that very night, a cruel spectacle that would erase the fragile spark of life Brian has nurtured.

Overwhelmed by fear for what he has created, Brian and Hazel return to the house and find resolve in each other’s support. Hazel praises Brian for even having made Charles, and the two of them begin to hatch a plan to save him. They confront Eddie at the bonfire, and in a tense confrontation that gathers the town’s attention, they stand with the help of the inventions Brian has crafted. With a combination of courage and ingenuity, they outwit Eddie and his family, driving them away from the scene and restoring a sense of communal protection.

The morning after, a wiser Brian recognizes Charles’s restless, world-hungry spirit and, with a gentle emblem of freedom, gifts him a pass that will allow him to travel the world. At the train station, Brian and Hazel bid Charles farewell as he prepares to embark on journeys across far-flung cities, a beacon of possibility rather than a closed door.
