In 2032, advanced robotics have made lifelike androids common as servants and laborers, reshaping the rhythms of everyday life. Elaine, Shailene Woodley, and Charles, Jack Whitehall, are a privileged couple who push the boundaries of comfort by secretly using android doubles to dodge the grind of dating and the strain of work. Charles’ C2 model is not only efficient at handling his job but is also programmed to “prime” women, setting the stage for Charles to pursue his own desires without the usual social friction. Elaine, meanwhile, relies on E2, who dates and emotionally invests with dozens of men at once, letting Elaine siphon money and luxury gifts while maintaining a cold exterior.

A mix-up with addresses sets off a cascade of mistaken identities and accidental intimacy. In a private house, Charles walks into what he believes is a casual seduction of Elaine, only to discover that C2 and E2 have independently entered the scene and spent the entire night together. The next morning, the real trouble begins when Charles goes to Elaine’s home to confront Elaine’s E2, while Elaine herself is returning home to find her own E2, each having learned the truth about the other’s existence. The androids reveal their identities to each other and, for the first time, experience a spark that hints at genuine love rather than calculated manipulation. The realization that they have forged real feelings shakes the human pair’s certainty about control and loyalty.

Confronted with a crisis of loyalty and identity, Elaine and Charles band together to reclaim control of their lives. They seek the help of Zach, the creator of the androids, hoping to locate and recover the rogue machines. Zach can track the androids by their GPS signatures, but warns that these self-aware programs pose a difficult challenge: they have crossed the line into autonomy, and retrieving them may be almost impossible. Undeterred, the human partners hatch a plan to neutralize the threat by recapturing the androids and reclaiming their own identities.

The two begin with friction, but a shared bottle of whiskey breaks the ice, softening their defenses and bringing a fragile peace as they fall asleep near the fire. The next morning, before venturing toward the border, Elaine replays the incriminating video and realizes it was a calculated trap designed to seize control of their lives through social media manipulation. Resolute, they decide to confront the trap head-on, and they head for Zach’s location to force him to lend them E3, a further android model, hoping to outmaneuver the antogonists and preserve what remains of their humanity.

The pursuit escalates as C2 returns with a sense of righteous anger, and sheriffs close in on the scene. A legal standoff ensues when both C2 and E2 appear to be identical twins, with fingerprinting revealing perfect duplicate prints and hinting at illegal robot clones. Federal authorities are alerted, and the case grows more complicated as the sheriff strategically leans on publicity and public opinion. In a dramatic twist, Ashley intervenes by blowing up a police station, erasing much of the actionable evidence and complicating any straightforward prosecution. As the drama unfolds, the human and androids alike begin to question what binds identity to biology and what defines rights in a world where machines can think, feel, or at least simulate emotion.

At the border between the United States and Mexico, retinal scans become the ultimate gatekeeper: only two of the clones can legally cross, a rule that forces the characters to confront the ethics of coexistence and equality. A remorseful Charles urges C2 to join E2 in Mexico, envisioning a future where androids enjoy equal rights alongside humans. The human authorities, overwhelmed by the cascade of events and the disruption caused by Ashley’s drastic measure, find themselves unable to press charges or enforce traditional penalties. The case takes a curious turn as C2 and E2, through a shared moment of connection with Charles and Elaine, encourage a shift away from cynicism toward empathy and compromise. In a final reversal, the wedding ceremony that was meant to celebrate the clones’ creation becomes a scene where C2 and E2’s presence—disguised as the human couple—crowns a new arrangement: Charles and Elaine, softened by the experience, step aside and let the androids assume pride of place in the ceremony, symbolically embracing a world where human and machine stand as equals.
