The film picks up right where L’armata Brancaleone left off, with Brancaleone da Norcia leading a ragged band through the desert toward the Holy Land, joined by the unpredictable presence of Zenone and his motley army of underdogs. Their march is soon interrupted by another group of Christian warriors who accuse Brancaleone’s company of heresy and launch a clash that leaves him temporarily out of the fight. In the aftermath, Brancaleone discovers that Zenone and most of the others have been slaughtered, casting a pall of shame and grief over his quest.

Despair drives Brancaleone to seek a radical, almost otherworldly redemption. The Grim Reaper himself appears and offers him a chance to redeem his honor by saving an infant of royal blood before death can claim him. Brancaleone accepts the daunting task, defeats the assassin known as Thorz, and rescues the baby he has vowed to deliver to his father, Bohemond of Taranto, who fights in the Crusades. This perilous journey unfolds as a series of grotesque episodes that parody medieval stereotypes while testing Brancaleone’s loyalty, courage, and stubborn sense of duty. Among these moments, Brancaleone helps rescue a young witch, Tiburzia, from the stake, and the group reluctantly takes in a leper, a move that only broadens the eccentric cast around him. A pivotal scene brings Brancaleone to a famous papal confrontation: he must navigate the dispute between the pope and the antipope Clement III in a fateful meeting with Gregory VII.

As the party reaches Palestine, Brancaleone delivers the infant to his feudal father, yet the child’s birthmark does not confirm the expected lineage. Tiburzia reveals she is a witch and admits that she used magic to erase the birthmark. Bohemond, angered by the uncertainty, orders Tiburzia’s execution, but Brancaleone argues for mercy and convinces Bohemond to banish her instead. With this brush with mortality behind him, Brancaleone earns the title of baron and is chosen as a champion in a ceremonial tournament meant to decide the quarrel between Christians and Saracens during the siege of Jerusalem.

The contest appears to promise victory when the prize is revealed to be a former leper—who, to everyone’s surprise, is actually Princess Berta d’Avignone, traveling in disguise. The revelation shifts Brancaleone’s priorities, and he presses on toward glory while Tiburzia, who has begun to fall in love with him, uses magic in an attempt to tilt the odds in his favor. Her spell, however, also brings heartbreak, because it foils Brancaleone at a crucial moment and leaves him humiliated before the assembled crowd.

An already fragile triumph turns bittersweet as Brancaleone confronts his own mortality once more. Death returns to claim him, and he begs for a knightly death in a final duel with the Reaper himself. The clash reaches a fever pitch, and just as the Reaper’s scythe is about to end him, Tiburzia sacrifices her own life to save the man she loves. The pair confess their love in a quiet, intimate moment even as Brancaleone wanders the desert, and Tiburzia ultimately returns in the form of a raven, a haunting emblem of love, loss, and transformation that shadows the film’s ending.
