As the wheels of fate begin to turn, Boxcar Bertha Thompson’s life takes a dramatic shift when her father’s crop-dusting plane crashes to the ground, leaving her orphaned and adrift in a sea of uncertainty. The oppressive weight of the Great Depression settles in, and Bertha seeks refuge in the freedom of freighthopping, an itinerant lifestyle that allows her to traverse the country’s rail lines without the burden of a permanent home.

Years later, she encounters Big Bill Shelly, a passionate union organizer with an unyielding spirit. Their connection ignites a fervent romance, but soon reality intrudes upon their lives. Together with Rake Brown, a charming gambler with a taste for risk, and Von Morton, a former employee of Bertha’s father, they become embroiled in a series of audacious train and bank robberies that quickly gain infamous notoriety.

As their exploits draw the attention of the authorities and the ruthless railway magnate, H. Buckram Sartoris, the group finds themselves engaged in a tense cat-and-mouse chase. The danger escalates when Rake meets a tragic end, leading Bill and Von to face their own dire consequences as they are sentenced to a brutal chain gang.

While Bertha narrowly escapes her captors, she is soon ensnared in a dark underworld of prostitution, forced to confront society’s grim realities. Her path takes a startling turn when she runs into Von at a rundown tavern frequented by African Americans, learning that Bill has managed to break free from his chains and is now hiding from the law.

With Von’s determination, Bertha sets out on a quest to reunite with Bill, only to be met with a horrifying revelation: Sartoris’s henchmen have brutally crucified her lover. In a shocking twist, Von emerges just in time, skillfully dealing with the henchmen and rescuing Bertha from her grim fate. Together, they make a desperate bid for freedom, determined to evade the relentless pursuit of the law.
