Maria, Rosa Rosal, and Jose, Tony Santos, begin their married life by planting a peaceful countryside lanzones orchard. They raise four children — Miguel, Leroy Salvador, Arturo, Carlos Padilla Jr., Angelita, Marita Zobel, and Lito, Danilo Jurado — weaving a simple life within a close-knit rural community. They live contentedly until a widowed stranger named Bruno, Joseph de Cordova, arrives in the area, rumored to have killed his own wife. Bruno seeks a new start and sets his sights on Choleng, Mila Ocampo, a niece of Jose. Choleng dies after tumbling off a cliff while trying to escape Bruno. Bruno retreats to the mountains to hide from the angry villagers, but soon returns and commits a horrific act: he rapes Jose’s daughter Angelita. The community bands together as Jose and the others pursue Bruno, but he shoots Jose in the confrontation.

Jose’s son Arturo goes to Manila, while Miguel—the deaf and mute—courts Gloria, Carmencita Abad, a local woman. Arturo returns from Manila with a city woman in tow. He manages to persuade his mother, Maria, to mortgage the family’s rice fields before heading back to Manila. A landowner from another town hires Bruno to ruin the lanzones harvest of Maria’s family; Bruno and his crew are thwarted by the villagers. In the end, Miguel kills Bruno, and Arturo returns from Manila to reconcile with his family.
